Does anyone know of some good and reasonably priced places to get some parts Chromed?
I know there are plating shops around but dont exactly want to start calling them all and would like to know good or bad experiences to help pick the right one.
I got in touch with a guy who does powder coating so im thinking of going this route instead. He says thay have a Chrome powder coating as well.
He also suggested Cambridge custom Chrome if I decide to follow through with the Chrome route.
Parts are my Intake Plenum (cast white metal) and the strut bar (Alum I think).
I’m thinking powder coat the intake in Gunmetal (same as my rims if the color is close) and maybe do the APS logo in chrome. Doing the center part of the strut bar in chrome and leave the two ends as is so i still have the APS logo on them.
Trying to dress up the eng bay a bit what do you think ? here’s a pic as is.
the “chrome looks like polished aluminum” so the shadows are “silvery/blue-er”
where chome has a very black shadowed reflection.
powder coating goe’s on in a paint LIKE manner but it has electrodes for improved static charging of the media
powder coating is great as it handle’s heat well and can be readily repaired
chroming is for show cars and completely a hassle to clean…and its one of those things that looks really shitty dirty and really hot when clean
where powder coat is fairly subdued at any time and not nasty looking when dirty…
I’d go gloss black and or the gunmetal for everything you can…including the intake tube etc…
anything can be powder coated i suggest getting those timing gear covers and anything else you want as the major cost of that job will be the mixing and media…once you considder the intakes is being done…
this way you get a suuper custom engine bay FINISHED in one shot for only like $150 more
the colour is your choice i just like the gunmetal / black idea better…
transparent red clearcoat over chrome or the “chrome-like powdercating”
these will look like blood spilled on chrome look i know your probbably hot on…
also available is a high silver content paint…looks like flat chrome…that can be top coated with transparent red…this is more like a true candyapple paint job…but not clear red over chrome…
transparent red can be put over the “chrome like” in the same process if you ak for it as they usually clear the “chrome like” anyway…
there is a good powder coating place in markham at mccowan and the 401 area…the guys may sneak you a side job too…but I cant be sure
some types of anodizing are exclusively for aluminum and often not rugged enough for the life they will live with us owning them…
so often when there is something you own with an anodized finish it is also clear powder coated…often in a satin clear as anodizing is a satin finish too
