hardware connect/disconnect issue

My laptop keeps making the hardware connect sound, then the disconnect sound (as if i were inserting a usb flash drive then removing it.)

It just does it randomly, sometimes 10-15 time in a row. I’ve disconnected all my external stuff, and it still does it.

Where to next?

edit:
running windows 7

check the event log

i did, there isn’t anything at all there… i’m not sure if i’m looking at the right place.

it just goes crazy in bursts, but then sits quiet for hours.

Expand the Windows logs and check both application and system logs…look for them around the time this is happening. Also check your scheduled tasks.

the only tree that has a lot of recent activity is this:

---------- Post added at 06:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:29 PM ----------

Ok, it just happened now, and 2 different ones popped up in the system tree:

“The Tablet PC Input Service service entered the stopped state.”

and

“The Multimedia Class Scheduler service entered the stopped state.”
immediately followed by:
“The Multimedia Class Scheduler service entered the running state.”

---------- Post added at 06:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:32 PM ----------

then these three just now, in a row:

-The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from demand start to auto start.
-The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from auto start to demand start.
-The Windows Modules Installer service entered the stopped state.

are you using a tablet? If not disable the Tablet PC Input Service. Not sure why these are going off like every 6 seconds. What A/V are you running? Have you done a scan recently?

Try Disabling non essential services on startup (Start >> Run >> msconfig >> Services >> Check the box to hide microsoft services >> Disable all services unless you know you need/want them.)

I am not using a tablet. I will disable it. I’m using Microsoft Security Essentials for real time, and i just ran a full scan with malwarebytes this afternoon.

I just disabled a couple things, i’ll reboot but it’s bedtime. Thanks for you help man, i’ll post back after i see what happens.

edit:

20 minutes and so far so good… maybe it’s fixed

LMK how it turns out…

Good choices on the A/V by the way

Looks like i’m good to go. The culprit had to do with an AMD service attempting to connect to an external display that wasn’t there… no idea why, but now that it’s disabled i have no more hardware connect/disconnect sound insanity.

Thanks again prog, you’re always helpful with this stuff.

ahem… POS KARMA
