Thinking about making a weekend trip.
Yes stayed in gilbert and rode for 2-3 days straight all over the place. There are some HARD trails but everything about it was incredible. Definitely a must do.
When I went back in 06 i was on a 400ex, if I were to ever go back again I would be on a 4x4 of some sort for sure, I actually wish i could have spent more time down there exploring everything and probably will at some point.
Plans are to take a few people, I’m sure some of us will end up going out alone on the harder trails. I’m going to be bolting on some skid plates before I tempt anything to extreme on the renegade lol
Not that I own a quad but that’s pretty awesome.
^ I believe you can rent quads down there, if you were ever interested in doing it, I highly recommend it and anyone that’s been there before would as well.
Any trails better than the other to start at? I’m looking for the higher % of black and black/red trails.

Also any idea what the permit cost? I can’t seem to find a price?
I am not sure about either, I was 14 when I went and was just along for the ride. I can check with my dad and see if he can remember anything. Also if a trail is marked as hard, expect it to be very hard lol there are some just straight up and down rock climbs. Probably will be easier on a 4x4 though lol
Those look pretty good. I was driving through that area last weekend and was wondering about atv trails in those mountains. There is some pretty steep and rough terrain in those woods.
I’d be interested to see how hard the black/red trails are. Around here every place I was warned the black trails are extremely hard. What joke that is, I have harder trails at my rents house.
I’ve never ridden on any trails that are labeled with difficulty so I cant compare, but I’ve ridden at my buddies property in Allegheny and there is some tricky stuff down there. Granted, this is my first season on one its trx250r, so it takes some getting used to compared to motorcycle riding. He had some cool trails through the woods down there.
How do they rate difficulty? Based on the terrain and rocks etc?
250r is the hot ginger g/f, nice and sweet on the outside but nasty in the bedroom. Trail are rated based on terrain. I’d imagine Hatfield/McCoy will have true black trails.
User Permit Pricing WV Residents: $26.50 (w/ tax)

Girlfriend and her family did it… Supposedly it was amazing but they couldnt get through most of the super technical stuff because of the kids.
I’ve ridden in VW on some back woods trails and holy hell.
Your riding on the side of a mountain and then you need to turn and go up the mountain to finish. I was on a YZ125. It was tricky, but I made it. I will try anything, besides a roller coaster.
My friends brother who lives in Virginia has ridden hatfield mccoy, says it’s very extensive and good riding.
Has anyone been to these parks/trails to ride? They’re a bit closer.
Majestic used to be good but I have not been there in probably 5 years. It’s nice there because most off the trails are one way and you can ride as fast as you can.
Tallpines is 60 miles of trails I think, but it all pretty good I got about half of them.
I want to go back for a day trip sometime. There is a little moto x track there, obstacle coarse, mud bogs and trails. It totally worth worth it.
in for day trip
Well, I didn’t make it down to the trials in my OP.
I did how ever go down to Potter county, PA for the day with a few friends.
I was on my 08 renegade 800, other on an outlander 800 xxc w/ stealth snorkel kit last guy was on a YFZ450. My parents and a bunch of their friends went down to a camp ground you camp and bring your wheelers in with you. Ride right from your camper / cabin to the trails. State trails are like, um well roads. You can drive a corvette down them. The other half is a bunch of private owned land people let you ride on. The first trip out, I forgot the GPS and the camera. We only went to a few places I remembered, set back to camp for lunch.
After lunch, We set out to what they call the “golf coarse” Pretty tame trails getting there. Once you make it there its more of a race track.
Jumps, rolling WOT hills, and the trails that lead off this place have some challenging climbs.
This was the first climb getting into the place,
Second hill we found, I was at the base of the hill and had the camera zoomed in all the way. The little dot is my buddy on the outlander.
The view to the other side of the hill that seemed to be a bit more of a challenge.
This how ever was the hill that defeated two of the 3 of us. I was on 8 ply radial tires, pretty hard compound. The outlander was on 2 ply holeshots, and had some flex. He has 700 miles on them and they are at 1/2 tread to give an idea how soft they are.
We get about 75 yards up the hill and have to stop, small tree down. We have to winch to another tree to keep the front end of the wheelers down
We get the outlander past the tree and now my turn.
My tires WILL NOT BITE I’m spinning all 4 on top of flat rocks and clay.
I’m trying to get traction someplace, but after this I gave up and winched myself back down the hill.
We passed a group of people at this little mud hole. Didn’t look bad at all. We crossed this same stream about 30 times in many different spots.
Ok, so maybe I was wrong.
Eff you wet belt, I have some videos up in a bit.
All and all it was a great day of riding.
