Heads are ported & milled about 0.010", just to clean them up.
The smaller thickness is recommended not for the increased compression ratio, but to improve the quench (compressed head gasket thickness plus deck height should be around 0.035"). The Impala gasket is 0.029 vs stock of 0.047, which brings it closer to an 0.035" quench, and reduces chances of detonation. Seems contradictory - higher compression but less detonation, but I believe it’s the higher velocity that increases the cooling.
Doesn’t matter if new or used, just want to compare them. I’m trying to find them in stock somewhere to look at them, but if not I might take you up on that offer.
