Help, anyone won 4 “muffler outlet” being too large but not noisy. I have a greddy full 3.5" to 4" exhaust thats very quiet but I still got pulled over by a cop and got my 115 outta my pocket that easy. He told me unless i change it to something smaller id have to pay up.
I remember a few guys back in the day who won.
Any help or suggestion to what to say or not to say to the judge would help.
I have about 5 that ive gotten in the past 3 months or so…im fighting them for sure…why pay something so stupid. For mine i just ask them if they have any idea what the stock size is for a 240sx…almost everytime theyre clueless (last cop told me he had all the measurments at home lolll yea right) then tell them the stock size is 2, 2inch
outlets…which it is. hopefully that helps…my buddy gets away with it 100% of the time with his s13 so yea lol goodluck
but see the thing is my muffler is 5" out and 4" in, not like u said its 2" and u also took an inprint for for tip. he gave me a ticket for exhaust outlet not “noise”
me and my friend got the same ticket last night in my 180 and his silvia lol… 4 inch as well, $115… were gonna go fight it… i remember there being a thread on 780tuners about a case number or something to bring up in court to get out of these tickets… ill try and find it…
Just fight it…what do you have to lose…i went with like 2 exhaust tickets…the crown through one out and the other i had to pay full amount so i said fuck it and am going to fight it…its a stupid fart can i dont see how its illegal…
i got a ticket for ‘enlarged outlet’, i told the cop that diesel trucks run around with that shit and hes says ‘i give them tickets too, it’s just your lucky day’(fken bs) so i fought it and the police officer never showed but i only had it reduced by half, about 50$ (because of the highway traffic act).
my exhaust outlet is large yes but it’s much quieter than most of that size (fujitsubo ftw! :D)
i’d say fight it you might win, but i think most people get pulled over more than others because the police see the large exhaust then hear it, noise level just add’s to the cop’s willingness to give you a ticket.
i’ve been followed numerous times by police right behind me and haven’t gotten a ticket since knock on wood maybe it’s worse up in Edmonton??
GL!
p.s this is the what the Alberta Highway Traffic Act states
'(4) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by
an internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler, the exhaust
outlet of which has been opened or widened.
(5) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by
an internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler or exhaust
system to which is attached any device which increases the noise of
the expulsion of the gases from the engine or allows a flame to be
ignited from the exhaust system.’
Unless you have widened the muffler after you bought it you should be able to fight that your exhaust is exactly how you bought it, and that it is a direct replacement for your factory system. I fought with that and won, and that was on a 93 civic with a Greddy Evo2 catback system which has to be close to 5 inch. You didn’t widen it, it came that way. It says no where in the law that the exahust system should have the same size opening as the car did with orgional equipment.
the cop says to me that the muffler size must be identical or same diameter as stock, just be glad we dont have as harsh laws as in Ontario for these things.
It’s questionable grounds to give a ticket on. The muffler had not been modified from its original manufactured design and thus the ticket would be void since no where in the legalesse it states that it is illegal to install a new muffler (especially since a prior point states that hole or leaks are unacceptable).
But then again its the old, stop the “street racer” routine…
(on a side note, Item 6 of that list states that the exhaust items doesn’t apply to Bus / vehicles that carry over 24 passenger… Does Nissan make a bus?)

“It came that way” does not fly … and is a common excuse among people who get ticketed by cops for large mufflers. I am sure the cop will not buy that one for a second and just because “YOU” didnt modify it doesnt mean that it isnt modified
its a pissing fight match, all depends who drank more water wins. just need to be respectable, well prepped and only state good facts, also soone promissed to post up the winning case numbers, that’d help.
the po po can give you a ticket for ANYTHING they want on your car.i had a similar problem and a sat down with a sergent and he told me all the details
it all comes down to “they are right, you are wrong” attitude that the police have.
if they are being dicks, a po could give you a ticket for not having mud flaps, tires that stick out past fenders, ride hight, lights, some much shit, its retarded, exhaust is just one of the easier tickets to give.
i got a ticket for having snow on my windows at 12:30 am on a tues morning.
i called to po office, and after talking with the sergent, he told me that he had complete faith that his officer was in the right, and just doing his job, keeping the streets safe.
they can be such bullshitters.
but at the end of the day, they probably all go into the change room, start laughing and say " shit you should have heard ticket i gave this punk ass ricer kid, SNOW ON HIS WINDOWS!!! HAHAHAHAHA"
^^ yes… that kind of thing makes me sick. guarantee a 40 year old dad wouldn’t be getting a ticket like that. again, its cops targeting a demographic to “crack down” on us “teenagers”
