Help - Civic CX Eating Oil - test results inside

Brothers 94 CX Hatch (130k miles) has been eating oil. Today I had a chance to look at it.

  • No leaking surfaces, just general seepage
  • Only blows white out of the tailpipe when >50% throttle
  • Light oil spray out of pipe just past the exh. manifold (rusted through)
  • Crankcase was 2.5  quarts low. Though I don’t know how regularly he tops it off, I changed oil in September when I bought for him.
  • Engine idles & drives well enough - no stumbles or misses.
  • There is no evidence of coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant.
I was hoping on just replacing the valve seals.

So, pulled the plugs (which I replaced in September) and found these:

Not what I was expecting after 4k miles.

Compression test:

----Four Three Two One
Dry: 40 120 165 160
Dry: 60 125

Wet: 145 145 120 120
After 15 sec.: 150 150

Mind You that Haynes calls for:
Standard: 184#
Minimum: 135#
Max Variation: 28#

Me thinks I need to have it leak down tested…

So, he needs rings on 1 & 2 but not 3 & 4? :eyebrow: How does that happen?

the red hatch?? damn :frowning:

i wouldnt mess with the motor drive it till it dies and then replace the motor. untill it dies llook around for a new one there a dime a dozen.

I will buy it off ya. Let me know.

yarr.

I picked up a $20 D15 longblock & tranny, it’s sitting in the garage for just such an occasion. I just didnt want to dick with it.
I don’t know if the spare is in any better of shape. Should just re-ring & bearing it and swap it in, eh?

If your looking for a engine I have a spare cx engine let me know, and I’m thinking your cylinder 1 is shot…from the cmpression test but who knows smell the exhaust any oil burning smeell?

Theres other things that just rings that can cause this…

Do a leak down test, and youll know if its the rings, intake or exhaust valves. Id sure as hell hate to tear down the whole motor to replace the rings when it was only a burnt valve or something as such…
