I just reinstalled XP on my Dell Inspiron laptop, and i when i close the lid, the computer stays on and the screen turns off. When i open it back up, there is no way to get the screen to light back up. Last time i reinstalled the OS i kept installing drivers one by one until the thing ran like ass again.
So does anybody happen to know which driver, or what its called that i need to download so i can get my screen back up. I thought it had something to do with the power settings, so i grabbed all those one by one last time and never got it figured out…
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display Properties > Power Management (I think) > and look through there to change the setting “What do do with lid is closed” to “Do nothing” (you probably have it set to stand by - which should start up from pressing the space bar, escape key, or power button). I can edit this to be exact if you want when I get back to work…I’m very used to Windows 7 now and I can’t remember the exact things you need to click on.
Also, if you go to Dell’s site you can enter your service tag (should be on the bottom of your laptop) and that will take you to the drivers page that is specifically for your machine with your hardware.
I would not recommend Dell Quickset (their application that controls power settings, etc.) It made a lot of work for me at work before I figured out what was f’in up my settings. I promptly removed it and don’t include it on any machines any longer.
Or that. Both should be listed on Dell’s driver page once you enter your service tag (if you just go by model, you may see more than one video card driver, etc.)
I havent downloaded any drivers yet. Last time i was going one by one and couldnt get my screen issue fixed, so i went with the Dell Quickset. I think that was what killed me from there on out, ever since then the thing was slower than shit.
I have had a simliar issue with which I could not find a true fix for.
Basically as soon as the laptop would go to sleep, it would come back on with a scrambles graphics output. Even after updating all chipsets/graphics, it would still do it. The only thing I could do to make it not happen was to either allow the laptop to run off of the standard VGA or to turn sleep/hibernation mode off completely.
it worked!! You dont know how long thats been bothering me lol. Idiots at dell were never worth any help either.
How about this…since i reinstalled windows last night, now when i boot up i come to a prelimary screen which ask which operating system to use? They are both Windows XP…how did i end up with a second one? Is there a way to remove the option so it will boot automaticaly with no delay?
If you leave it, does it automatically boot up? You just have to edit the boot.ini
Right click My Computer, select Properties, click Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Here you can change the options… if the default option works, you can always just leave it and remove the timer. The proper way would be to identify the default and delete the other line.
