So I want to winterize my bike, and read that you want to drain the carbs before-hand, and running the engine with petcock off still won’t drain em.
Ok, so I read up on how to do it, get the tools and try to unscrew the two tap bolts.
Now, I’m using an Allan key since that’s what the bolts are, and both of those mother***s heads strip.
Before anyone asks - no, I wasn’t going clockwise, no, the key wasn’t the wrong size, and no I didn’t use a powertool.
Just looking for advice for what to do next, since I have no idea wtf to do with them now.
Its common to strip them…can you get vice-grips on them?
heat them lightly wit a torch they will come out ;D
or just pound a bigger torx bit in it the extra teeth will help bite better than the allen would i would try this method first
One of them maybe, the other not even if I take the carbs off the bike.
But that second one I stopped when I felt like its beginning to strip like the first one, so I might be able to unscrew it yet.
I’ll try getting one of them off with pliers tomorrow and see how that goes.
Can you order those from dealer or swap em from another bike?
Or do they just come with the carbs?
you can get them what kind of bike is it???
Torx is what I used the second time around, it still felt like it was getting stripped (couldn’t see it well).
I’ll try the bigger bit tomorrow.
It’s an 03 ninja 250, so I only need two of em.
Keihin CVK40’s IIRC from the motor I had here not long ago…yeah you can get those parts from the dealer. Both mine were stripped too. Bowl oxidized and locked them in place. you’ll probably have to drop the bowls off the bottoms to get them out easier. 4 phillips screws each. rinse the fuel out of them then use a low direct heat on the casting(candle works well) once you have a larger bit tapped in place and they should come out.
rep parts were like $12 for both i think…
Thanks Adam, I think I’ll do just that, take of the carbs and do it right…
Might as well since it won’t be going anywhere for a while.
It’s probably a good idea to keep the carbs on the bike during the winter though, right?
Less chance of crap getting into the motor.
or you could just use screw extractors and buy new screws we sell the extractor kit for like $20 at advance auto
word, removeal required to get to the screw now anyway.
Removed the carbs today, drained the gas (looked pretty yellow, must the stabilizer I put in it).
As I was removing the second bleeder screw I also found that the one of the Allen keys I was using was screwed up and because of a notch on it didn’t go all the way into the screw. Still don’t know why the torx bit didn’t work. Got them both out, the one that was stripped by cutting a slot through it with my Dremel. Since now I have the carbs sitting there I want to check how clean the needles are, but a regular flat screwdriver either doesn’t fit, or is too small to get the needle without stripping it. What tool do they use for this, anyone know how much it runs?
