Help with engine block

Ok,lets try one more time from a pc.(not my blackberry). So my friend calls me and tells me that his engine block broke.i went to his house to see it and this is what happened. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g182/josuedc2/utf-8BYmxvY2sgMS5qcGc.jpg is this fixable? can he take it to a machine shop and have it fix?can it be weld?

junk.

Was that a motor mount??

yep thats the driver side motor mount(bracket)

o man

no

what kind of car? im going to guess a gm product?

I know on DSMs, the timing side motor mount bolts on, but I think he’s screwed. Looks to be part of the block that sheared/cracked off on that one.

How did he do that?? Dropped it off the stand or something??

looks like a b series…maybe get it tig welded?

b18b?

i don’t think it can be safely tig welded.

also, it wouldn’t be super expensive to get a new block compared to welding it, having it fail, and needing to replace the block anyway.

honda (b18).you don’t think tig welding it and using stiff motor mounts and putting an engine damper will keep it from snapping? more opinions please.thanks

still motor mounts would make it re-break faster.

if its part of the block you are better off finding a new one.

repairable, I’d say yes. Worth it, (providing you have it repair properly) No.

Domestic hate FAIL. :zong:

I would say that’s not a good candidate to be properly welded, and definitely not cost or time effectively unless you knew a hell of a tig welder that was out of work and/or otherwise just bored to tears. Figure in order to have a good structural weld you basically need to melt the metal back together and have it reattach involving as much surface area as possible. The shape of that break being what it is you would pretty much have to grind and carve away until you could get in as close as possible to the center of the break on all sides including from the middle which would be a major pita to get in there at all, let alone have any kind of control over the penetration rate. Plus there are undoubtedly stress cracks all around the surrounding area caused by whatever happened so the entire area will never be as strong anyways

it sucks that the entire motor is going to have to be torn down and rebuilt just to swap the block out but in the end i’d say its the only way to go at this point. You wouldn’t catch me messing with that block

Years ago I bought a wrecked GSR from a friend. Both the rear trans mount and the driver side engine mount were fractured from the crash. It was not as bad as yours but I did have it repaired successfully. A local engine shop added alot of filler to tha missing areas, drilled and Helicoiled.

I have a hard time believing a welder would want to be liable for possible future disasters that might come from this.

He would only be able to fix what is visibly wrong…

Scrap it

i have a b18b motor…

well thanks guys,my friend is going to take it to northeast machine shop…see what happens, any good machine shops or really good tig welders out here in buffalo???

ive seen iron block motors that had repairs like this made but never any aluminum… It may be worth a try… worst thing that could happen is that you have to replace the engine anyway

Lowlyoilburner.

I’m guessing he runs away from this though. Contact Innovative. He works there sometimes. Maybe he’ll want the challenge??!

no way… unless you know somebody personally that really likes to weld… like others said, no welder is going to want to take the responsibility for that failing again. Get a new block.

just go for repairs. wont be a tough job for service men unless you find good ones. and welding and filing can do the work for you i guess
