Hercules Tires - the WORST!

Alright, as you guys know, today’s weather is pretty nice for doing a few drifts and whatnot in the parking lots. Not for me…

When I first got the car, it came with Hercules H/P4000 tires on the rear and almost-bald no-name radials up front (Motomaster I assume).

Anyway, throughout the first 3 days of ownership, I noticed that my rear tires were going flat. My rear driver’s side was completely flat while the passenger side was almost there. So I assumed one of the neighborhood punks (or the punk who goes to my school to placed a Kijiji ad for a '94 RX-7 FD3S under my name and phone number) removed my valve caps and pushed the needle to let the air out.

So I go in my garage and start up my air compressor so I can refill the tires.

Tires are properly inflated. Good.

5 days later, they’re flat again… I refill the tires assuming its one of the neighborhood punks again.

So a few days ago I wanted to machine my rear rotors. So I pull off the wheels and place 'em on the steps on my porch while I’m in the garage machining them on the brake lathe. I noticed that my mom was watering the plants to I tell her to spray the wheels as well. No harm done.

After I installed the rotors and calipers back on the car, I go to pick up the wheels from the porch. Just then I noticed that a small amount of water had formed around the area where the tire meets the wheel. I then notice bubbles coming out, indicating that the neighborhood punks didn’t do anything to my tires and that all I’ve got is a slow leak. I was like WTF? More problems on this thing!

So I shrugged it off, since refilling the tires with air is a good thing, at least there’s no nail or some s#!t in the tires.

Anyways, onto today…

The tires were fine today, they were still inflated properly, driver’s side having 33 psi while the passenger had 34 psi. Should be even and at 35 psi but oh well…

So I go to the closest parking lot (big empty church parking lot in the middle of nowhere) and initiate some feints to get into a drift (I’ve got an automatic, so no e-brake pulling for me). Just as I came out of my ‘jook’ and into the drift, I head a loud sound coming from my rear passenger side. It sounded really awful, like metal on metal contact. So as I slowly drove off to the side of the parking lot, it sounds even worse. I fear the worst, assuming that my UCA broke and that my alignment and everything got fscked. I get out of the car to take a look and noticed that the wheel is still aligned properly, but that my tire came off the rim! WTF?!

I knew from past experience that these tires have stupid-soft sidewalls, but I did do a drift a few weeks earlier during dry weather and my tire didn’t come off, just a LOT of air. But knowing rain, the coefficient of friction should be less than during a dry weather situation, right? So technically, I’m putting less strain on the tire now than I did when the ground was dry. Why is it that my tire came off now? I wasn’t even going faster than 40 km/h when all this happened…

So I put on my 4-way flashers and drove home. I then had to pull out the spare and put it on. Since you’re usually supposed to put the spare on the wheels that AREN’T the drive wheels, I decided, wtf, screw it. My front tires are bald and I don’t even drive often enough in a week. I’ll source out someone locally to install my tire back and balance 'em for cheap.

Anyone in Durham with a tire changed + balancer who wouldn’t mind picking up my wheel/tire and re-installing it + balancing it for cheap ($10-15?)

I don’t really know the point of this thread, its really just me venting and asking for someone to fix up my wheel/tire as well as say that Hercules Tires are :greddy:

If anyone has had any experience with Hercules Tires, go ahead and share them with us.

Auto, rust, wtf…it’s a sign, Stop drifting.

NEVER!

:picard:

Haha…

Anyway, I got the tire back on the rim. I just inflated it until it popped back, then inflated it again to 35 psi.

I noticed that I did lose one wheel weight though :frowning:

I’ll try to look for it tomorrow along the side of the road

thats a sick stretch you got there in the second picture

Drifting in public? Are you looking for some kind of sympathy?

I don’t mean to be condescending, but…well, actually, yes I do.

Wow, you were drifting and you expected not to damage your tires despite the fact that you knew there was a problem with them beforehand? Before you start slamming Hercules tires - check yourself and consider your preemptive actions prior to your “mishap.”

I’ll just stop here.

Its in an empty parking lot in the middle of a field of dirt, trees and an empty construction zone. If there was people around, would you think I would start drifting? Its enough that we’re getting stereotyped for the cars that we own and the things that we do to/with them. I want to learn how to drift, so I do so. If it involves the public watching me and possibly getting stereotyped, of course I wouldn’t do it. I’d either wait for everyone to leave of go somewhere else. There are no “free” purpose build areas to learn how to drift in my area without getting stereotyped by the public or seen by experienced guys and possibly get laughed at. What other choices am I given? Give up at least learning to drift in order to be better prepared for winter driving?

I’ve done many e-brake donuts and other stupid stuff in that parking lot before with other cars, including a Protege with 14 inch 3 year old Michelins, as well as my first car, a '91 Stanza with 4 year old Motomaster tires so bald, the metal fibers were already sticking out. I’ve driven with those tires through the previous winter before the car was sold. Sliding in the snow with gone-to-hell-tires? Yes. Beat the crap out of the tires during rainy seasons in spring/summer? Of course. Coming off the bead and leaking? Nope.

My dad’s truck has a slow leak on his rear driver’s side, but its never gone flat, and last time he’s put air in it was when it dropped to 31 psi. His leak doesn’t adversely affect the handling of the truck for at least 2-3 weeks. My Hercules tires need to be refilled at least once a week.

And this isn’t some kind of sympathy call or whatever you’d like to call it.

During moderate cornering in dry conditions, these tires bend so much that they let enough air to escape from the tires that after I get out of the car to look, its already beginning to show signs of an impending flat. Keep in mind, this is during a trip from my house to my closest CT.

I’m not looking for sympathy, I just wanted to voice my opinion and experience with Hercules tires. Whether you like the way I proved my experience or my opinion, thats up to you. You’re open to your own opinion, but don’t go on assuming that I’m looking for sympathy and whatnot.

they’re pretty much the cheapest tires out there and you expect them to be race worthy or something?

and the leak isn’t the tire, it’s the installer’s fault.

this thread is ridiculous.

I expected them to at least hold up the weight of the car… I mean, I had old Motomaster tires that were more durable…

As for the leak, how can the installer make the tire leak? Bad installation of the wheel weights causing it to tear into the tire?

My dad’s truck has stick-on wheel weights, yet it still leaks… Please explain.

No offense.
but you talk about how shit the tire is
then you put it back on and stick with them?

Get something better,
your life rides on 4 pieces of rubber.
BE A BALLER

and honestly, ive slid in an auto 240, and it is not the bee’s knee’s … DD FTW

if you need rims and tires for a EXcellent price, PM ME BROTHERRRR

I’d put fault on 50% installer/50% user.

But blaming 100% on equipment just seems a lot easier. I know I hate it when my brakes go out on me, despite the impending feeling in the pedal, squealing brake pad indicators, and my mom’s warnings.

the hold the weight perfectly fine for driving to work and back which is all they’re meant for.

do you have any idea how a tire is put onto a rim? if you don’t clean the mating surface of the rim it will probably leak. i’ll blame the leak on a lazy ass installer.

the wheel weights have nothing to do with a tire leaking, i’ve never seen a wheel weight cause a tire to leak. ( i used to work at a mechanic shop, i’ve installed a lot of tires)

Don’t worry, I’ve got a set of Canadian Tire winter alloys (ghetto baller status) with some Michelin all-seasons on 'em that I used for my Protege. I just need different lug nuts since the wheels need thinner lug nuts and the one I used with the Protege had a different thread measurement. $50 @ CT and I’ll be back in action. The wheels + tire combo is the same size actually, got the tires cheap so it was slightly larger than the recommended diameter for the Mazda. Universal 4-hole pattern helps a lot too.

Assuming I do clean up the rim of the wheel and have it installed properly, would these same tires still continue to leak, or would the bead of the tire be damaged enough that it would be pointless? They still have adequate thread on them, so I do expect to burn them off at least (as for spirited driving, not on this set of tires).

if you take it to a shop that doesn’t suck they’ll remount and balance them for you.

yeah seeing the pic’s i do see some crud on the inside of the lip. you should lightly sand/scrub that shit off and go send them to be remounted. The tires look pretty new to me, So i see why you would want to have a little more use out of them instead of ditching them for another set. Good luck on that… PS. Take it out to the track.

did you drive home with the tire like that? if you did you just ruined it.

DON’T drive with that tire again, even if you got the bead to seat again.

I’m with simplemind7, it was installed wrong your wheel is probably corroded and the lazy ass that put on those tires probaby couldn’t be bothered to buff the lip before mounting. as for it blowing off, that would probably be due to the shitty seal and low tire pressure.

but anyway if you drove with the tire flat its garbage, the rim chews up the rubber from the inside and wears through the tire to the belts. Its extremely unsafe to drive on that tire.

im with fobwall

Well ive never heard of a tire just coming off becasue of drifting…ive burnt some of those exact tires i think …never had a problem yet…im thinking its the installation that was the problem…did you go out right after the tires were put on ? still wet inside the lip ? would casue it to pop off…who knows…very strange…
