Just recently bought a 91 240SX, and I was driving it today when i started noticing a funny noise coming from around my driver side rear wheel. Soon after, my HICAS light turned on.
Could someone tell me what this means? I’ve heard that when the HICAS light turns on, that it could just be the steering fluid.
The hicas light turns on when there is something wrong with either the steering, back wheel alignment, or just something it doesnt know how to react to. It means it has locked the hicas in the back.
The noise could be something wrong with your back wheel, possibly causing it to shake or something, hicas detected that something wasnt right and shut off.
Id check everything that is connected to your back wheel to make sure that hicas hasnt detected a more serious problem.
Well also check your powersteering fluid levels…
well i just had the opposite happen to me…ever since i’ve had the 240, (about a year and a half) my hicas light has always been on. Just today while driving, it shut off…does that mean my hicas is working now?
Thanks guys… I was reading up on the technical section on NEO and a couple of members were saying that they experienced the same kinda problem with the HICAS light in rainy/wet weather. It was raining last night when it happened to me, and when i drove today it was fine so I’m assuming that was the deal.
ive owned 2 s13s now and i dont even know if my Hicas worked on either of them. the first one, the light never turned off, and this one, the light never turned on.
How do you know if hicas is working? like, would you be able to “feel” it when turning, or does it make any kind of noise when the rear wheels turn?
Hi :
I am Bruce, the Hi-cas light on is because powersteering fluid levels is too low. The detector are senesive. If the hi-cas light on means is not working because the fluid is not enough. Light off is mean working very good.
You could add the fluid by your self, you could buy it from Canadian Tire , a small size fluid will be fine because i do not think it need a lot of fluid. Make sure the name of the fluid is the right one.
Hi-Cas is mean 4 wheels steeling system. When you are driving high speed or above 60km/h to make a turn , the system will detect your steeling angle, speed , and road sitations to make the rear wheels turn in a suitable angle (for sure) , and balance both side the rear wheel to help you finish the high-speed turning.
It also can decrease the understeeling when you are turning in high speed.
It is a very good system, it save my life few times.
Sometime the road is wet , just control the gas, when you are oversteeling , the front wheel will turn it for you to the correct way too.
BUT do not try it on the road, try it at a big parking log without any car or people.
Hope you can feel the same way I did,
Take care
