High Fructose Corn Syrup

Mt. Dew is tasty, and it helps me stay awake, but these facts about the corn-based sweetener that has crept into most of our food supply may surprise you.

We all know that there are healthier things to drink, but what you may not know, is that HFCS is far worse for you than traditional sugar, and sugar should be cheaper…but it isn’t.

If you decide to read any of this article and the totally screwed up policies that drive the corn market in the U.S., you may ask yourself why we would need a corn subsidy at all, now that E85 has driven the demand for corn far higher than it has ever been in the past.

I question the corn subsidy, and the reasoning behind it.

"Why is HFCS so much cheaper than cane sugar? The answer to that question may surprise you.

Because the government wants it that way.

The Federal Government accomplishes this in two major ways:

  • Sugar Tariffs
  • Corn and Sugar Subsidies

Add these two variables together, and the result is sweetener made from corn.

The difficulty in explaining how the above work is in understanding that none of the above would exist without at least tacit complicity between the Sugar Industry, the Corn Industry and the United States Department of Agriculture. Remove any one of those three players from the equation, and the tariffs and subsidies most likely go away."

So you’re saying the government is trying to kill us?

A friend of mine read a book about Corn and all that shit a while back. How it’s in like every food or something.

Feel free to make any conclusion you like. There are plenty of facts around this subject that are readily available.

(An interesting sidebar is that since NAFTA opened up Mexico to cheap U.S. corn exports in 1994, the domestic price of corn in Mexico has dropped a staggering 70%. This has been absolutely disastrous for Mexican farmers, many of them have had to leave their farms and migrate to Mexico City where they live in dire poverty alongside 22 million people.)

Population control?

If I was playing Sim City, a natural disaster would work fine but ‘poisoning’ the food supply does the job just as well yet slower and more inconspicuous.

Or possibly to keep us fat and subsequently dependent upon government run medical programs…

it’s all a big web of deception…

blah blah blha… hfcs is recognized and processed by your body the exact same way that sugar is… yes its in just about every food…NO its not causing obesity and/ or diabetes,… people overeating/overfeeding their children is causing that shit… its no more worse than table sugar or pure cane sugar. the news reports on hfcs once or twice a year when the rest of the news is slow…same with mercury in tuna… theres mercury in just about ALL fish but you only hear about it when theres nothing else to report on.

Incorrect.

Both sucrose and dextrose are broken down in our body before they ever make it to our liver, however fructose does not breakdown and reaches the liver “almost completely intact”. This feature of fructose (which in HFCS is of an even higher concentration) has been named “metabolic shunting” since the fructose is “shunted” or sidetracked towards the liver.

Fructose is used to build triglycerides in the liver, which it does by imitating insulin, causing the liver to release fatty acids into the bloodstream. The flood of fatty acids then causes muscle tissue to develop insulin resistance.

It has been found that our metabolism veers towards fat storage when consuming high levels of fructose. Therefore, HFCS contributes to obesity not only by the fact that our brains don’t know that our stomachs are full, but also by causing the body to burn sugar rather than fat in our cells.

oh! 2tone shot down by the internet!

You should google things before talking. (2tone)

no…correct:
HFCS is 55% fructose and 45% glucose. Thus, if HFCS is carcinogenic, then so is sugar. Sugar (sucrose) is made up of a molecule of glucose and a molecule of fructose chemically bonded together. This bond is quite weak, and is cleaved in your saliva and in your stomach, so by the time it gets absorbed into your system, it is already broken down into the glucose and fructose molecules. Thus, every dose of ordinary sugar is equal to a half dose of glucose and a half dose of fructose. HFCS gives you almost the same dose of each of these simple sugars.

i used to work int eh R&D department at Del Monte which uses hfcs in just about every product aside from pet food products, and study upon study came across my desk on this subject.

i cant get on that website you linked to here at work cause for some reason its blocked and content is pornography (gay ass fortigard) but all im sayin is check the validity of yoru information. theres alot of ‘opinion’ out there vs actual fact. I dont wanna start a big argument casue everyone forms their own opinion on this and believe me we used to hear them all at del monte but the fact of the matter is its in everything these days and if you dont like it then cook your own food and use fresh products. hfcs is NOT making people obese…neither is mcdonalds…neither is wendys…poor dieting habbits and no exercise is! Im not gonna lie i eat like shit b/c mainly im always runnin around somewhere, but i hit the gym jsut about everyday and as of tuesday im only at 7.7 percent body fat. so it just goes to show you that exercise makes a huge difference… and anyone that says they dont have time to is full of shit! sorry tho thats a whole nother rant! anyway thats my .02 cents … jus tbe careful where you get your info. ok…im done

pfff…google is the LAST place where id ever go for my informaiton.

I agree, but the U.S. Federal government uses OUR money, to artificially lower the price of corn, which is the only reason HFCS came into widespread use.

And although it’s not deadly, HFCS is worse for the body. The BS is that they take our money and use it to prop up a product that is less healthy than the one it replaced.

o…well all that i dunno know about lol…it may be so. the govt is shady like that so im sure thats true… the problem is the general population is too lazy / stupid to make the right health decisions on their own. but it is what it is i guess… someones making some money off it somewhere up the totem pole so its gonna be a huge part of canned food for a long time …

Anyone shop at Whole Foods? Anyone? Well, if you’re thinking that they are any better and will save you from the evil HFCS, think again…

(For those that didn’t know, he was allegedly yacking on Yahoo messageboards with WFMI shareholders under an aliased name and really shouldn’t have been doing it, code of ethics, etc.).

And he wasn’t allegedly discussing recipies for banana nut bread either…

Conclusion: He seems like a flim-flam-sham artist too ready to take your money and probably lies to you about the treatment/prep of food they sell.

I missed something? Who is “he”?

Guy that wrote the article is part owner of Whole foods and has conflict of interest?

it’s not a vast conspiracy to kill people. It’s for the same reason the government does anything. Money.

What do we grow more of, corn or sugar?

go to canada.

no HFCS there.

every soda tastes better.
