Postgame hit-runs injure deputy, 2 others
Hundreds of fans witness chase as vehicle speeds from lot, strikes pedestrians before being caughtA harrowing police chase witnessed by hundreds of Buffalo Bills fans leaving Ralph Wilson Stadium after the football game Sunday ended with an Erie County sheriff’s deputy and two pedestrians being struck by the same vehicle in two separate hit-and-run incidents.
Deputy Thomas M. Van Wie was directing traffic at Abbott Road and Southwestern Boulevard when he was struck by a speeding black Jeep coming from a parking lot off Abbott.
The fleeing vehicle, which had Texas license plates, turned east off Abbott onto Southwestern, where it then struck two pedestrians near the intersection with California Road, about a quarter-mile away from the first incident, authorities said.
With a sheriff’s helicopter hovering overhead, the Jeep continued east for about another quarter-mile, where it went off the road and struck a telephone pole. Police caught up with driver, and he began fighting with them before being taken into custody, according to authorities.
Brandon W. McLean, 19, of the 4000 block of Ledge Lane in Clarence, was charged with driving while intoxicated and other offenses that have not yet been released.
Unlike the deputy, who was treated at a local medical facility and released, the pedestrians suffered “significant injuries,” police said. One was taken to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight, and the other was transported there by Rural/Metro Medical Services ambulance.
Their identities and conditions were unavailable late Sunday night.
In addition, two members of the Orchard Park police were injured, along with a deputized stadium security officer. “It’s very, very fortunate that no one else was seriously hurt other than these two pedestrians by the fleeing vehicle,” said Michael M. Pliszka, chief of police services for the Sheriff’s Office.
The chase began at about 4:15 p.m. after Orchard Park police received a tip that there was a suspicious vehicle in a stadium parking lot possibly involved in the sale of drugs.
When stadium security personnel responded in a golf cart, the Jeep struck the cart in the vicinity of Erie Community College South Campus.
Driving in an area designated for pedestrians only, the Jeep was pursued by security officers wearing yellow windbreakers and driving in three golf carts. The security personnel tried to warn pedestrians by screaming to get out of the way.
At one point, a security officer caught up to the Jeep and tried to reach inside the vehicle’s passenger door, but the Jeep speeded up and the security officer went flying to the ground, an eyewitness said.
The Jeep then rammed into a guardrail behind which dozens of people were standing and then raced toward Abbott.
“When the Jeep hit Abbott Road, our deputies said the vehicle was traveling erratically at a high rate of speed,” Pliszka said. Van Wie, a five-year veteran of the road patrol, suffered multiple injuries and abrasions after being struck by the Jeep, Pliszka said. “He was taken to Mercy Hospital’s Ambulatory Center and treated. It could have been so much worse.”
The two Orchard Park officers were also treated at the center.
Meanwhile, a second accident after the game occurred on the Thruway near Exit 54 at about 5:20 p.m., according to police.
Six cars were involved in the accident, and about 10 individuals required on-scene medical evaluations. State Police later said that there were no serious injuries.
