Postgame hit-runs injure deputy, 2 others
Hundreds of fans witness chase as vehicle speeds from lot, strikes pedestrians before being caught

A harrowing police chase witnessed by hundreds of Buffalo Bills fans leaving Ralph Wilson Stadium after the football game Sunday ended with an Erie County sheriff’s deputy and two pedestrians being struck by the same vehicle in two separate hit-and-run incidents.

Deputy Thomas M. Van Wie was directing traffic at Abbott Road and Southwestern Boulevard when he was struck by a speeding black Jeep coming from a parking lot off Abbott.

The fleeing vehicle, which had Texas license plates, turned east off Abbott onto Southwestern, where it then struck two pedestrians near the intersection with California Road, about a quarter-mile away from the first incident, authorities said.

With a sheriff’s helicopter hovering overhead, the Jeep continued east for about another quarter-mile, where it went off the road and struck a telephone pole. Police caught up with driver, and he began fighting with them before being taken into custody, according to authorities.

Brandon W. McLean, 19, of the 4000 block of Ledge Lane in Clarence, was charged with driving while intoxicated and other offenses that have not yet been released.

Unlike the deputy, who was treated at a local medical facility and released, the pedestrians suffered “significant injuries,” police said. One was taken to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight, and the other was transported there by Rural/Metro Medical Services ambulance.

Their identities and conditions were unavailable late Sunday night.

In addition, two members of the Orchard Park police were injured, along with a deputized stadium security officer. “It’s very, very fortunate that no one else was seriously hurt other than these two pedestrians by the fleeing vehicle,” said Michael M. Pliszka, chief of police services for the Sheriff’s Office.

The chase began at about 4:15 p.m. after Orchard Park police received a tip that there was a suspicious vehicle in a stadium parking lot possibly involved in the sale of drugs.

When stadium security personnel responded in a golf cart, the Jeep struck the cart in the vicinity of Erie Community College South Campus.

Driving in an area designated for pedestrians only, the Jeep was pursued by security officers wearing yellow windbreakers and driving in three golf carts. The security personnel tried to warn pedestrians by screaming to get out of the way.

At one point, a security officer caught up to the Jeep and tried to reach inside the vehicle’s passenger door, but the Jeep speeded up and the security officer went flying to the ground, an eyewitness said.

The Jeep then rammed into a guardrail behind which dozens of people were standing and then raced toward Abbott.

“When the Jeep hit Abbott Road, our deputies said the vehicle was traveling erratically at a high rate of speed,” Pliszka said. Van Wie, a five-year veteran of the road patrol, suffered multiple injuries and abrasions after being struck by the Jeep, Pliszka said. “He was taken to Mercy Hospital’s Ambulatory Center and treated. It could have been so much worse.”

The two Orchard Park officers were also treated at the center.

Meanwhile, a second accident after the game occurred on the Thruway near Exit 54 at about 5:20 p.m., according to police.

Six cars were involved in the accident, and about 10 individuals required on-scene medical evaluations. State Police later said that there were no serious injuries.

heyyyyyyyyyyyy
that just might be my paperboy

so classy

i was directly across the street on southwestern when that happened. i want to say the jeep came out of the parking lot on the stadium side right before the bridge there. the only reason i turned around and saw it was because he drove out of there so fast with the tires squealing it sounded like a burnout. and i was like wtf. so then the jeep just goes towards the left into the oncoming lane on the other side, goes up the curb where 100’s of people are walking and hits the concrete gaurdrail i guess it would be on the bridge. and taking out 2 people as he did that. the one person easily was 5-6 feet off the ground after they were struck by the jeep. the other person didnt go nearly as high. someone else jumped over the side of the bridge to avoid getting hit. then the car sped off down the road and a cop was chasing him closely behind and spun him into a flagpole further on up the road. and the jeep had 1 if not 2 flat tires as he still tried to get away

but it was the craziest accident i’ve ever seen in person. almost like something that would be in the a movie the way the person flew through the air.

Good for that kid.

I was right on abbott when the jeep pulled out of the bills lot. He just took off going the wrong way down abbott weaving in and out of people. I have never have seen anything like that happen. Something was seriously wrong with this guy, I highly doubt it was just alcohol that was in his system.

Well he’s going to jail for a long long time.

It’s hard to grasp how someone can be that stupid.

After the Daytona 500 no one is allowed to drive for at least 1/2 hour after the race so all of the pedestrian can get to their cars first. I am thinking that may have helped in this situation. Maybe not, who knows?

:fail:

its not like the people were in the middle of the street when they got hit. they were on the sidewalk on the other side of the road

Well if they were in their cars…

The thing that is odd about the whole situation is how it started. He was not getting pulled over by the police or anything when he started to run, he just pulled out of line and decided to start speed down the wrong way on the street which was full of pedestrians

Stop, you’re hurting my head.

Ok I am not in the mood to argue with retarded children today.

Must be a hard life in Clarence…

Rough Monday BlueEyedDevil, eh?

Yeah, right?
I make a suggestion of someting that is already being done and some know-it-all little piss pot attacks me. I knew everything when I was that age too. lol

hope the pedestrians pull through.

el oh el

Oh no, you see, i’m not agreeing with you. Although I can understand your point, do you really expect EVERY single person attending a Bills game will be in their cars half an hour after. That’s just outlandish.

When I said rough monday, I figured you had a few to many during yesterdays games and were feeling a bit hazy today, it sure seems it.
