2003 Honda crv 5 speed lx. The car grinds when you put it in first gear all the other gears are fine. My first guess is Imput shaft bearing? Could it be anything else slave cylinder ? Throw out bearing ? Just put a new master cylinder in the car this week. Any ideas or imput would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Why the new master? It could be a bad slave… if the clutch isn’t dis-engaging all the way. Can you shift into 2nd then first? syncro maybe? could be a couple things.
Are you sure you got all the air bubbles out? I’m wondering if the clutch is disengaging all the way. I don’t think it’s an input shaft bearing, pilot bearing, or throw out bearing. Remember, 1st gear is semi synchronized, 2-5rd are fully synchronized, reverse is not.
If all the other gears are fine my guess is the first gear syncro.
Is the clutch engaging with the pedal really close to the floor? If the clutch engagement point seems normal (somewhere around 1/2 of the pedal travel) I doubt it’s a clutch or hydraulic issue.
Does stationary vs. moving matter
Was this issue present before the MC replacement?
The grinding was an issue before the master went on it. It goes into gear fine when the car is off but grinds if you don’t put it in second before putting it into first. How could the 1st gear synchro be bad it’s probably the one gear in the transmission that gets the least amount of abuse seeing as it doesnt come after any other gears.

new master because the peddle stuck to the floor and wouldn’t come back up and it was shot but yes if you shift Into second then into first it usually doesn’t grind.
Slave and bleed. I love 2nd gen CR-V’s in 5spd awd trim.
Think that will help? I love them too
I would start there if it were me. Or sell it to me so I can fulfil my dreams of reliability
Pm me if you’re serious
Def burp it. It could be an engagement issue caused by some air. Report back with results.
Definitely report back because I don’t see how it could be an engagement thing with the other gears working fine. The fact that it doesn’t happen if you shift to 2nd before putting it in first really sounds like the 1st gear syncro is toast.
I have no problem being proven wrong and learning something new though.
Will report back in a few days it’s just bizarre how a first gear could go second and third I could understand but 1st ? How by slamming it into first ?
or a failing mc/slave causing constant 1st gear grinds for too long and killing the synchro?
IDK…
Burp it, it’s the cheapest way to eliminate a cause.
+1 on 1st gear syncro.
It’s very typical that the hydraulics slowly fail, making it harder and harder to get into first and reverse. Then you force them and ruin the teeth. Bleed it and get back. I’m banking first gear is ruined.
If it were the hydraulics typically you couldn’t get it into second or reverse easily.
Could be the syrnco though usually that slowly wears though.
I’ll report back once the slaves done. It’s just bizarre out of my 22 cars I’ve never experienced one with a bad 1st gear synchro. 2nd and 3rd yes from people beating on them and slamming it into the next gear.
