Agreed. Don’t listen to any recruiter that tells you “out of college you only should expect 20-30k a year” if you are in IT.

Over all, the college experience was worth it. I am glad I stayed at a SUNY school for cost wise. It did teach some lessons about being on your own and that everything doesn’t come really easy like it did in high school which I think may have helped me in my career.
It’s funny that you even posted that d3x. According to Wikipedia, MIT researchers were some of the pioneers of NC machines. Damn dirty Universities.
I’ll post up my w-2 from walmart later.

I went to one of those career peptalks at UB. There was a handle full of guys from that IT Networking group (the one lz hangs out at). The one guy was a recruiter and just spewing a bunch of garbage about how you should work helpdesk and be happy just barely being able to afford your apartment.

4 year CIS degree from Buff State
Software engineer small local company
mid 30’s an hour before bonuses, profit sharing, 401 matching, free health insurance, 3 weeks vacation
I think my boss summed it up well when we were going through resumes for our last hire. Resumes without a 4 year degree went in the trash because a 4 year degree, even if the stuff you studied is outdated, shows dedication and the ability to study and retain information. It also shows a more rounded background than some IT/Programming wizard who self taught because all they do is IT/Programming.
or it shows they were able to party for 4 years and cheat just enough to pass.
I know some real idiots with degrees.
I’m the first to admit, education is good. But sometimes college is nothing more than a real expensive party. I suppose it boils down to the individual.
I feel bad for some of the kids I see getting hired right out of college here for basically peanuts, doing nothing even close to what their degree is in.
I agree with JayS having a degree is great but doesn’t guarantee you won’t be working for someone with out one.
