As a general rule college is good but, it depends what you want to do really. Obviously doctors, attorneys, teachers, etc, require college but, there are thousands of millionaires that did not graduate college. College does not = money.
 mid 30s an hour… rollin in the $$$
I guess I need to get more ambitious…
<~~PC Tech, No schooling, $15 an hour. I need more green!
I wish I was rolling in money…
If I keep on my game plan 4-5 years I will have my CCIE/JNCIE which should pull in 100k+ in Buffalo.
A lot of people in IT stop trying to move up or settle into a position with no growth.
100k a year would be nice… I just get overwhelmed when thinking about how much I got to learn and dont know were to start. Learning this stuff on my own isnt easy.
Education: Bachelor in Computer Information Systems (programming concentration) - graduated in 08 and completing my Information Systems Security Certificate from ECC in May 10. Plan on starting my MBA in the Fall 2010 at Canisus College
job: IT Specialist but soon to be Security Analyst I within the next few weeks
hourly wage: salary
weekly: Not bad for my age but I am paying a mortgage, 2006 Trailblazer, school loans in 5 years rather than 10 years, and regular expenses.
I plan on getting my Security+ certificate and then go for my CISSP because I will need to get sponsored and have 3 - 5 experience in 3 of the 10 domains (I think it something like that).
In the end, I don’t think I could move through 4 positions in 4 years without having a college degree.
I think I’m starting to fall into that category. The problem is I really like where I work and I’m making enough to be comfortable. At some point you have realize that chasing a bigger salary isn’t going to make you any happier.
+1
It also turns into a job that goes beyond 9-5 M-F. That is something I DO NOT want.
nysinspector
almost done with BS mech eng
between 9-16 an hour, varies
Yep. A good friend of mine went the consulting route and I know he’s over 100k a year now. Problem is he work 60 hour weeks and I haven’t seen him take a full week off for vacation in years. Yeah, he’s got a sweet house in a fancy new development but his daughter is going to be moving out by the time he realizes he doesn’t even know her.
CISSP is being offered in Buffalo next September.
Okay, since you guys are actually posting real stuff, so will I.
Education: None. I got my training from 4 years Active Duty Air Force.
Career: Air Traffic Controller
Hourly: $30 a hour Regular, $60 a hour govt holidays, $33 a hour evenings, $37.50 on sundays. And if a holiday is on a sunday thats a biggie. $75 a hour.
I work 40 hours a week and my pay changes based on what shift Im working. Downfall to my career is I don’t have a standard M-F job, with holidays off. I work rotating shifts, and I work most holidays. I get one weekend day off weekly for 6 months out of the year, the other 6 months I have no weekends off :(.
You guys are both missing my point. I’m not saying that furthering your education is a bad idea. Just calling out the universities for their profiteering tactics. In order to get a degree at any university your are required to pay for and pass classes that have absolutely nothing to do with your career path. And these classes are easily 50% or more of your curriculum. So at least half of your money and your time is basically being thrown away. That would be like a muffler shop charging you for a whole new exhaust when all you need is a muffler. This would almost be acceptable if that piece of paper you payed out your ass for guaranteed you a good job…but it doesn’t.
So IT or Air Force are where all the money is at.
Damn I did that wrong.
Finance $$$$ > IT $$$
You don’t say - I am pretty sure it would be an intense program and I am far from being ready for the program.
Have you done any SANS certificates/programs?
One thing I would of suggested was placing your age next to your information. I think I am getting a little under paid but at the same time, I should consider myself lucky for having a house at 24 and having a job in downtown Buffalo.
It also has a lot to do with being an educated individual that can actually contribute to society, not just knowing the material specific for your major.
50% or more? clearly you are uneducated about the education system.
I would never go to an expensive private school though.
Eh, if you go to a liberal arts school I see his point. So much bullshit in the core curriculum.
SANS is great if you have someone else pay for the classes
I might try and grab my CISSP in September I however need to learn Alcatel at the same time so we will see.
im 26 btw
yeah I know…but to put universities on blast is ridiculous. He wouldn’t have a job without MIT’s research.
Some people need to realize that higher education does not exist to hand you a job. It exists to teach you material. They want to make sure you get a well rounded education, not just job training. If you want that, go find certification programs. Most professors at large universities are clueless about the real world. Maybe 2 of my CS teachers had any clue what the real world was like.
