How to F windows.. seriously..

So this all started this evening.

I owed a customer a couple sodimm memory sticks, I traded him for something else.

I go to my girlfriends computer and just power it off using the power button.

I was going to steal two of her 512mb sticks, and replace it with a 1gb stick that I had sitting around.

The customer needed two 512mb sodimms.

I pop the stick in, and start the pc.

Its stuck at the resuming windows thing.

Apparantly when I shut it off with the button, it went to sleep, then i pulled the battery out and screwed it up by swapping the ram sticks out.

So I put the ram back that it had in it, still fucked.

At this point she’s in my office bitching “where’s my files! what the fuck are you doing”

So then I had to do the windows reinstallation with backup using the gateway thing, and chose the “backup my files” option.

Sure enough, i get into windows. None of her files are here.

Now at this time I’m freaking out, and hiding the fact that I lost a ton of her school papers, and important docs.

I download a pirate copy of active recovery software and start fucking with that.

I then realize that gateway dumped all her files into a folder called MY BACKUP or something.

I try to access these files and of course its “access denied”, because i’m not the same user as the previous installation (even though i’m an admin)

At this time I’m scratching my head, getting pissed off.

Then it hits me. I boot to safe mode, login to the administrator account with no password, then change the security settings of that folder to let everybody access it.

I create a password protected admin account for her, then attempt to view the files.

Bah, still no dice.

I mess around with the permissions, and check the subcontainer box. It takes ownership of the zillion microsoft word files that she saved.

It literally takes ten minutes to do this.

Reboot to her account, and finally i can see her files.

Thank god, I won’t get castrated tonight.

Tomorrow I’ll uninstall all that bullshit gateway puts on there, and map her a network drive to my file server that gets backed up to optical every month so that I don’t have to deal with her not backing up again.

“security”

no security… you prob put it into hibernate.

which when you pulled the ram… and you restarted it… it went looking for that ram. got pissy and you are where you are now

MST total disk access > u

Click Start button -> Shut Down.

That would prevent your entire disaster.

Hibernation puts everything on to hard disk. RAM is cleared when it has no power.
