My windows registry got real messed up and I couldn’t even turn the computer on, so I had a spare 5 gig HD which I loaded windows on and put my main HD as a slave and plugged it in. I can see all the program files and such, but I want to get all my pictures off of it to back them up. Here is my problem… I get something that says “Access Denied” when I try to access the admin desktop on a slave HD… any way around that?
Easy fix, I can’t remember how to fix it step by step though. But it went along the lines of:
Right click on the username’s foler in your “documents and settings” folder
Goto properties
Goto the security tab
Set your username, and the administrator settings to allow reading and writing by checking all the boxes
Interesting, I’ll try that when I get home.
There might be one more thing needed to do that but I can’t remember it off-hand. But it’s pretty straight forward. This usually happens if you have the files set private for that user account when using a password.
Either way it’s an easy fix. Just sounds like windows got corrupted and you lost the ability to boot. Once you get everything just run some diagnostics on the drive, if it’s good the reformat away.
My computer is running perfect right now, I just want to pull my pictures off the f: hard drive and reformat it… so we’ll see. Is it a good idea to just use the 5gig as the OS and save everything to the bigger HD?
pm me for my address.
it will get done the right way the first time.
btw… im the guy also known as krazyjon
lol
haha, I have a guy here in Boston that is willing to pull all the info off, but I want to do it so I know for the future. Knowing is half the battle.
if your getting that error you need to login to the windows installation.
I assume your xp install had passwords on user accounts.
Same applies if you are trying to view files through a command interface.
Justin, that is correct, I had a PW to log in. I haven’t tried through dos.
couldn’t put my PW anywhere in the properties…
Justin, how do I go through the windows installation?
seriously… i hope your boston guy knows what hes doing… i do this for a living… let me know
Odd that the option isn’t there, something else probably has to be turned on but. Can’t remember what has to be turned on to get it off-hand as it’s already enabled on my machine.
Just send it off to Locutus with some piping hot mighty, and he’ll pull all your hot porn off the drive including that you thought you deleted.
haha… no mighty where I am… I’m in Boston
The problem was that I had to take ownership of the folder. Here is a link if anyone ever has problems and link to the thread.
took 3 min to fix.
That was the option simple file-sharing. Was trying to remember how to get the security tab back on.
