How to remove aftermarket radio in 96 jetta?

My friend has a mk3 Jetta with an JVC headunit in it. The headunit is shot so I sold him one that I had laying around but we cant figure out how to get the old radio out. I dont think it uses any kind of keys but it kinda seems like it would be screwed in somewhere? :gotme: I have no Idea, anyone know?

yea vw keys… if your in a bind and can’t find any let me know

well, theres a few different ways this could have been put in there. if my memory serves me right, that style Jetta does not use a dash kit, so if there is a cage in there that the headunit is locked into, thenthe cage is whats screwed into the dash, not the headunit. from what i remember, most JVCs use keys, and the easiest way to pop them out if u dont have the keys is to take a old credit card (or something about that thickness and strength) and cut it into strips about 1/8"-1/4" wide and shove thos down the side of the radio. might take a little playing around but u should be able to pull it out then. if not, whoever put the radio in, wanted to make it a pian in the fucking ass to take it out a screwed the radio into the dash, in which case u gotta take the whole dash apart.

In case this gives you any inspiration:

The butt end of two jigsaw blades took out my OEM deck. Then when I had to take out the aftermarket deck, shoving a pair of butter knives down either side pressed the tabs out and I was able to pull it out.

If its a oem one, you can use a coat hanger push it into those two holes and the whole thing should pull out. If its aftermarket. there are 4 screws and the dash part comes out. Pretty straight forward.
