How-to: Replace wheel bearing

Well I went through the wonderful task of replacing my right front wheel bearing.

How do u know if u have a shot wheel bearing?

If you are hearing a grinding noise and feeling vibration at ur feet or thro the steering wheel, u possibly need to replace a wheel bearing. Another sign is if ur hearing a “whoop whoop whoop” sound, which kinda sounds like a tire thats out of round.

How do i know which side it is on?

In my case, since it was on the front when i turned the steering wheel to the left the grinding and vibrations would get worse. Thats why in my case it was the right front wheel bearing. When u turn the steering wheel to the left, all the weight of the car shifts to the right and vice versa.

How do u know these sounds etc. are pointing to a wheel bearing?

Quick checks:

On the highway pop the car in neutral and slam on the brakes. If the sounds subsides a little, its a bearing. Also, if turning the steering wheel like above.

NOW THE FUN PART:

  1. First jack the car up and support the car on two jack stands under the front cross member right after the control arms.

(Some wierd as was working on my car  )

2)Remove the wheel, brake caliper, rotor , and dust cover over axle nut, and this is wut ur left with.

At this point u can inspect the bearing further. Spin it and see if it spins smothly. If so thats one good thing. When its spinning also listen to how it sounds. There should almost no sounds, if its making a sound when spinning, its shot.

  1. Remove cotter pin and axle nut from the spindle. Removing the axle nut may may need the use of a breaker bar. I didn’t need one, cause luckly i’m a strong guy

  1. Remove the hub. It sould just slide off the spindle and leave u with the spindle itself.

5)Now, take the hub to a shop and get them to press the old bearing out (center of the hub) and the new one in. This is a picture of the side they press the hub out of. Remeber there is a retaining ring on the other side holding the bearing in.

And the picture of the other side where u can see the nice dry grease seal on the bearing.

  1. After u get the new bearing pressed into the hub, lube the heck out of it and lube the heck out of the spindle. I used high temp bearing grease for this task. Reinstall everything they way u took it apart, and replace the cotter pin if necessary.

Thats all there is to it. A simple Job that anyone can do

And muscle man has completed the job
