How to set up dual altornators

Ive got 2 screens, indash, xbox/powerinverter, amps and many aftermarket accessorys…custom headlights and its all killing my battery/alt so its either get my alt built up to the task and a better battery…or use my A/C bracket and modify it if i can to hold an altornator or make up a new bracket all together. The cost is cheaper to buy a alt and battery vs getting my alt build alone…i looked around and its expensive…not only that i still need 2 batterys so i need a isolator as well so one batt is for the system the other for the car. What kind of alt should i run? or what else could i do…i have 2 caps for the system…maybe make new grounds for the car? can anyone explain how the alt would be wired up using its own battery…then from there ill re wire all my accessorys to the new charging system. Ive decided my cars not destined to be a race car…i just want it to be really cool. airbags mounted to struts on the way…i dont care how much weight im adding to the car…church boys dont race or tokyoo drift.

Here is what I found to be usefull:

sell all your electronics shit and buy some wheels and 50mm front fenders.

those white 5 spoke works, a 25mm spacer and a 20mm will do just fine.

Good luck

Theo

I have wheels setup, and custom spacers to be made after i get the wheels…i like just the rear widebody…maybe bings flares upfront molded later on…and i love my gadgets inside the car.

i agree with this post.

I respect what he wants to do, not every 240sx or any other car has to be drifted, I also respect show cars alot since its really cool to have alot of gadgets in your car it makes it chilling status max vip. If you want to see whether you can mount another alternator beside yours and get a longer belt, and than wiring them would suck because it would have to be in parallel to mantain same voltage and than you will run into charging and current flow problems due to that batteries will always run together unless you can get some type of aftermarket module. I think its probably best and least headache to get a custom alternator.

ummm i dun think anyone here on son really done this stuff to extent … but for your subs u shuld have capacitors, ask farmer what he does for his s13 show car? his system looked like competition stuff and looks like needed some extra power…

all you need to do is get a good battery, get you Alt re rapped for 120amp+ and maybe re run all the grounds in your car.

Get a good battery or run multiple batteries.

To run multiple batterys i need an isolator…to split the power the altornator puts out to each battery…so that the two batterys never mate with eachother and drain their selves out. what i dont know is if a re wrapped alt say 120amps like benson said would be up to the task of charging 2 batterys…Thats why i was leaning towards a completly seperate charging system for the car…another altornator and another battery all on its own simply for my accessorys. I dont want to wire two altornators together…i wouldnt even try. Im looking at a brand new polished altornator that would mount up to a old 350 style engine…the brackets are simple and im hoping the wiring will be…then from there ill start on a bracket of some kind after i figure out wether i can do this or not. Select Sound in mississauga told me my amps alone are drawing a MAX of about 10amps more than the altornator puts out…but my music is not blared to that extent at any time.

I dont know if it will be sufficent but i know the murcury villager/nissan quest alternator will bolt right up by just drilling out the top bolt hole abit to fit the 240 bolt. This alternator is 110amp iirc and is half the price of a new 240 alternator.

hell is you are going to Mod an alt to work, get a alt from a ford F150 with Toe package, it is a 180AMP alt,

You will be fine to charge to battrys with a bigger alt, hell I would spend the money getting the Alt beefed up over getting a second battery at the moment. What good is having a lot of storage if you can not even fell it up.

Correct me if im wrong but i think im right… you mentioned you cannot hook up two batteries together or they will drain out each other?Thats not true. Thats how you get double the amps while keeping the same voltage.(assuming you have the two of the same battery) You would definetly need to get two of the same battery so that their tolerance, impedences, internal resistance, discharge rates, and all of the other tens of specs will be close to each other. By putting them in parallel(plus to plus … minus to minus) you will equalise the voltage in both batteries. these numbers are for example if you have a battery measuring 14v and one measuring 12v your paralleled them it would spark and in a few minutes they would measure the same voltage even after you seperate them, they would be both close to 13v +/- a bit. I do this all the time with electronics… not in cars but its the same concept. as for the alternator. I dont think they power will drain into the alternator even if voltages fluctuate as they have a diode in them to make the AC current that it puts out into DC which you can use to charge your battery, and it shouldnt let current back into the alternator But just for safety If you want to hook both these alternators up you would have to Get two more diodes I would suggest 24V 150A-200A. and hook them up to the positive terminal of each alternator then feed both into your battery bank(your two batteries in parallel) This would assure that if no power goes back into the alternator if battery voltages fluctuate. I would not suggest Seperating the two batteries it doesnt really make sense either… you would have more cold cranking amps also… for those tough starts. I WOULD suggest putting a slow burning 300A fuse on the positive between the extra battery and your original battery. Just so if something shorts, one battery shorting is bad enough shorting out two batteries you would amperages in excess of 1000+ amps for a short while… just for safety.

Correct me if car electronics work differently.

I know its long and excessive but its clear and in detail.

by bad i reposted these last two… sorry if mods can delete.

just go to a shop and get ur alt rebuilt to 180amps then run a second batt

i had a crazy audio setup in my sunfire last year and what i had was a 173amp alt + red top under the hood + Stinger SR200 High Current Relay to wire up second batt + yellow top in the trunk + 5farad Cap in the trunk and with everything going at max i would still hold very close to 14V

also once u swap out the alt for the new one with more amps get some 4GA wire and wire it up to the batt and a ground…so it gets power to the batt faster and better charging

also from the red top to the relay to the yellow top u might wanna use 0GA wire for the best transfer in power!

and with all that u should be able to run everything u have…and if u still cant then u might have to upgrade to a second batt in the back meaning 1 up front + 2 in the back…
