what if:

a. alternator was special order dealer only
b. alternator location called for 3-4 hours of labor, like on some lexus’s where you have to remove miles and pounds of shit to get to it

?

then dont have the work done.

in this world, ignorance costs money. people who have knowledge, skills, and time, charge people that dont $$$ for goods and services. if someone doesnt have the skills or time to do or make something for themselves, and they dont have the knowledge to determine if a price is unreasonable, then they will pay a premium.

bottom line, if this girl has the knowledge that this is too much, then she can seek a better price elsewhere. if not, then she will probably pay it.

i dont see how this is crooked or cheating someone. you pay a premium when you dont have leverage.

Call Channel 4, Get them going on this. Bet ya the price changes!!!

Yeah, I bet! I’m going to call up and bitch about the pizza place too, I heard it only costs them like $1.50 to make the large pizza that they charge me $15.00 for! Fucking crooked restaurants!

wow this thread should get locked just for the fact that it completly sucks.

People that complain about prices that mechanics charge are the first ones to complain when they took it to PepBoys and got their $149 dollar alternator installed by someone with no knowledge on how to properly work on cars but it only cost them $250 installed!!!

call napa on wherle and say you work for dunn tire on main street

Honestly, if your friend thinks she was treated unfaily she should call the Better Buisness Bureau and file a complaint. That or live and learn and go somewhere else next time. Every one has been there at some point.

And say what?:bloated:

What would the BBB have to do with this situation?? The shop gave her a price? They didn’t screw here over.

I wanna add…since I see it alot. I know alot of people want to “learn” how to work on automobiles.

BUT, when they either fuck it up BAD, break something in the process, strip something, ect. and bring it to someone that KNOWS how to REPAIR it correctly and bitches about the cost or the time it took (to figure out WHAT THE FUK you were trying to do) it pisses me off. Its rediculious,. People must think mechanics just wave their Jedi hand over a car and know whats wrong or can twitch their nose and the porblems come forward or repair themselves.
As far as bitching about prices…you gotta look at a labor book sometime. Some of the costs will make u realize why I drive older cars.
Plus on the mechanics end…a job (esp. on the newer cars) says 3hrs book time…it take a good 4-4.5hrs no matter what the book says…u lose out after the 3hr mark.
Life sucks most of the time…deal with it.
then take it to someone else. DAMN!!! its not being crooked its the mechanic trying to make a living whether or not you like his prices or not…
Agree. How does anything say “crook”? A crook would be someone who didn’t do work they were paid for. Or installed used parts when you paid for new, or something like that. BTW: if I were planning to keep the vehicle, I wouldn’t use an Autozone alternator anyway. Their parts suck.

the volvo’s mine. the only reason i had the car fixed at that particular shop is because my dad brought it there and paid for it. i tried telling him many times to take it somewhere else to get another estimate. he is an old stubborn italian man. i had no say in where the car was taken.

we’ve had the car there about 4 times in the past few months. one night they left the car unlocked, and my cd player was stolen. and he still brought it back there after that, regardless of what anyone else thought.

the cars been leaking oil, and they said that they fixed this problem 3 times already. its still leaking

now my dad wants to get rid of the car. i have no say in that either. does anyone know a fair mechanic?

send a pm to carnut or eviljay. hybrid connection is da shizit.

anyone who complains about markup doesnt know anything about running a business. yeah it might cost $1.50 in “materials” to make a pizza, but they still use their oven, and kitchen to make it. i can make a pizza at my house for $2, but i dont feel like it, so i pay $15 for one. Sidejobs are cheap cause you only get reimbursed for your time, but when you have taxes, insurance, electricity, consumable parts/gases, and are liable for everything that happens…if you provide insurance for your employees… its expensive. i do everything myself, cause i know how, and its not worth it to me to pay so much for something i could do for the price of parts.

some people just feel good having a shop do their work. a kid i work with’s girlfriend needed brakes, just front pads and rotors on a sebring. her dad paid $700 to have it done, when he could have done it for $60 in parts. whatever.

Yeah the warranty book. If the customer is paying out of pocket that book probably says 6 hours.
rant!:

so my friend needs an alternator, and this fucking shop quoted her at $700 for the alternator and installation. they said the alternator was $400.00.

i looked on autozone website, it’s only 199. i mean, she could even get it rebuilt for cheaper than that.

why do mechanics do this shit?
what the fuck.
i want to beat everyone in the head.

people should know about cars if they’re going to drive them.
/rant.
its not crooked the fact is the altwernator is probably not is stock anywhere except the dealer. service people dont look for the cheapest parts they look for the soonist available i dont think the labor should be 300 but if the book rates there then thats what u charge.
