I need interwebz at my apartment.

WEP is easily breakable. Particularly if its FIOS, theres a calculator online that will give you the password if they never changed it

If they’re FiOS boxes use the key generator (posted on here by either boxxa or LZ) most people never change the default WEP key.

<EDIT>
Go Nuts

http://fioswepcalc.webs.com/

Hell if your neighbors have the default SSID or a common SSID is fairly easy/quick to crack the WPA key also

So where would I find the 5 character ESSID number?

Thats the name of networks that show up in the wireless manager

I recommend paying for your wireless. It’s not like $40/mo. is that expensive. TimeWarner cable or FIOS are both great solutions, if they’re available.

Since when did NYSpeed become FelonySpeed?

I realize “Locks are for honest people” but since when did everyone on NYSpeed become burglars and thieves? LOL
And why are you discussing illegal activities on here? Isn’t that what google is for? Let’s not get Josh in trouble by talking about robbery, burglarly and software cracking

EDIT/NOTE: If the person you crack knows anything about their router, they will be able to log into it and see that you are connected. If you have a computer name “JEFFS LAPTOP” and you’re the only Jeff they know… guess what? They just found out it was you.

IF you do plan to steal or “borrow” a neighbors wireless, at least be smart about it. Change your computer name and spoof your MAC address, changing all of the letters & numbers so that they can’t use a MAC Address identification calculator to find out it’s from a Dell or HP, and pinpoint you that way as well.

Then what are you going to do Jeff?

Call the FBI?

Its an apartment complex…when I lived in a apartment i could hit wireless from 5-6 buildings away no issues with a stronger antenna.

I just felt like bringing the ethical side of the argument to the table. :stuck_out_tongue: Call them? They’re in my building. I can just walk down the hall… LOL

EDIT/NOTE: If you do steal or “borrow” someones wireless, also be courteous of their bandwidth abilities. Don’t download 50GB of data right after work causing them to be unable to browse the interwebz…

Those tubes are only so big and your need to expand your x-rated materials in mass quantities can wait until 3AM when they’re sleeping…

I would also like to add this isn’t something I would do…

I even have a piece of paper that says im ethical and certified.

Same here

I’m thinking about getting mine…Recommended?

Depends on how much you already know its :tif:

I do however highly recommend the better and much cheaper Offensive Security Certified Professional…Its also called Pentesting with Backtrack.

I also consult/teach for Mile2 so I can plug their cert Certified Penetration Testing Engineer formerly the CPTS…It’s been then the CEH but not on the same level as the OSCP.

CEH has a new revision out so it might be better and I know the DoD accepts the CEH as a valid cert now.

Which One of these for an entry level-ist?

http://www.campuslinc.com/categorydetail.asp?CatName=Security

Certified Ethical Hacker
Certified Penetration Testing Specialist(This is the CPTE I mentioned earlier from Mile2)
CompTIA Security+ (2008 objectives) <-- Weird they don’t have current course work but still a good basic class

These are all entry level…If you have some basic understanding of networking/os/command line

Find out who the teacher is before you take any classes…I took CEH there and the teacher was horrible I ended up teaching him stuff.

Edit: let me see if I can get a mod to split this off into another thread.

Paul Perry I believe teaches CEH…He also taught my SCCM class when I was there in May.

Interesting don’t know him either way let me know what you decide to do…

I might have additional resources for you.

Edit: You can borrow my CEH books if you want to check our the course material.

how about asking a neighbor to split the bill for access to their router password?

cheaper with no commitment or cables

Might take you up on that. My boss today told us to list things we need, to account for the budget next year. Training included. Campus link doesn’t offer OSX administration so I figured Security is a good thing to check into.

That would suck for me…Although if it’s a couple laptops then maybe…I need my desktop wired though.

no you dont. $30 at walmart gets you one of these:

which I used to use in my desktop. no wires.

^^if you go that route, ive got one i’ll sell ya for $15
