day 2 off trying to get my tranny back on. i finally got the imput shaft to clear the pressure plate and go in to the clutch disc whole. i cant get the teeth lined up or push the tranny in. i have been trying for 2 days and no matter what i do it wont go in. im worried im screwing up the teeth. remind me to not be so bold next time.
this was two man job for myself. I just put in a clutch with the help of canadiandrifter and it took the two of us to hook the trany up easily…
what we did was first put the car on a hoist… made it easier to work. then Chris would give the tranny a little shake while (not too gingerly but not to hard) pushing forward, if it didn’t go in, I turned the flywheel a little and did it again… it was trial and error until it went in… The fire wall does not allow for alot of play… the trany fits snug up in the there… drop the rear of the trany a little, turn the top of the trany to the passenger side so it is off line but still pointed straight, move it forward, move it up, turn the flywheel try and push it in and continue this over and over… it took us a few tries but once it is in you have about 15 minutes of work left…
edit out
im am using two people. the tranny is almost in so im using a socket on the main crank pully and turning it, then trying to push tranny in. i have been trying like this for 2 days and no luck. should i just keep trying that until it magically lines up?
what year 240 is this?

FU MAN, 4 weeks later and the transmission is somehow fused to the input shaft, 3000lbs/foot, and 3 people cannot remove it. you just wait till i’m done and you all will hear about the clutch change from hell.
what your doing … IVE DONE 2.5 TIMES!!!
:x
im sorry you screwed up your car but dont yell at me for it
don’t worry bout him, he’s just frustrated. we tried for 10 hours to get that tranny off today. I tell you what, i’ve never seen anything like that before.
As for your problem, i found rocking the tranny back and forth worked for me.
Alex… how’s it going? Any luck yet?
no not yet man. i didnt have much time to try tonight but tomorrow is another day.
yeah sorry man, and it might have been the partsource, that screwed up my car, as far as getting the tranny back onto the engine block, according to heavythrottle (and what i did) you can use the bellhousing bolts to slide it back up, if you are having alot of difficulties and using alot of force, then you need to pull the tranny and re-align the clutch.
hmm day 3 of trying to get my tranny back in. still cant get it, my parents just set a deadline for me and if i dont make it i get to pay to have it towed and fixed. just great
that sucks… there has to be someone in the area that can help you out… I am in the Falls and I had canadiandrifter help me out so I am useless…
But
ANYONE OUT THERE!?! HEEELLOOOOOOO
how i got mine on was i put it on upside down, untill it was flush, then rotated it 90 degrees and bolted it up, me and my dad put it on in about 20 mins in my back yard while it was raining and the car was on 8x8’s.
guys how do i know when its gone in. i just got it to go farther than i ever have but it stopped and i couldnt budge it. i could just see the flywheel teeth between the gap. it would move at all forward though. what should i do?
so you have about 1/4 inch to go??? jiggle it … you are not far off, you may be hitting the fire wall with the top of the tranny…
but it should mount almost flush… 1/16" before bolts go on
hey alex, over the summer i too took the plunge and did the clutch install myself
Taking the tranny off was the easy part, figuring out how to get the flywheel bolts off? easy.
Hardest part was getting the damn tranny back in… the car was 2’ off the ground and i had 4 people under the car including myself, and we couldnt get the damn thing in… SOB. After much cursing by everyone i said thank you for trying, gave them pizza + soda and they left. I then borrowed 2 jacks and cut many pieces 16" long pieces of 2x4’s. I spent 2.5 hours under the car manuvering the jacks and spinning the tranny around in different spots. After having the transmission scraping up against the bottom of the car, it finally popped in… i almost shit my pants. i thought it would never go in!!!
Heres some things that I learned while doing this:
The engine sits on 2 mounts, you can actually use these as a pivot point to help angle the engine back and forth. If you use a jack and many blocks of wood or one big piece (high enough to reach the engine) jack the front of the engine up under the front of the oil pan as far as it will go. This eliminates the problem where the tranny doesnt want to go up high enough since everything is angled away from the underside of the car.
Your biggest enemy is the bulge in the bell housing, this is the part where the starter bolts into, and this is the part that hits the shell of the car when you try to push it up. rotate the tranny to the right so the bell housing is basically pointing sideways towards the side of the car, after you get the transmission in rotate it back and bolt it up.
After you pop it in, it might not want to go in furthur, and the bolts might be too short for you to put them all the way through and tighten. if so, use one of the longer bolts and a bunch of washers in a hole ment for one of the shorter bolts, and you will be able to squeeze it together.
Never let the whole weight of the transmission rest on the input shaft, you will bend it!
good luck
if its not going in anymore, you will have to remove it and realign the clutch.
it sucks thinking of removing it again.
yea well i forced myself to take it back off and i realigned the clutch. in the process the tranny fell off both jacks and almost crushed my head, but i escaped without harm and so did the tranny as far as i can tell. i think its aligned properly now and its just a matter of lining up the teeth because it goes in much better now. i will try tomorrow. one day left before the towage, wish me luck
If that with 1000lbs pulling on it, three guys prying between your bellhousing and engine, and one crazy FC man kicking the cross member cant do it i dont know what can Nik.
Keep us updated.
