Inspection Questions (Classic car material)

I have a few questions regarding having a successful inspection on my 1984 BMW.

  1. Does it need an emissions test being 24 years old? I was hoping it is old enough to just be exempt.

  2. Do you need classic/antique/historic plates to be exempt from emissions?

  3. Can you daily drive a classic/antique/historic vehicle? I hear you can not exceed 5000 miles a year on these plates.

  4. Does the blower motor have to work? I have no air, heat, or defrost.

  1. No emissions sticker needed for Antique or Classic plates
  2. You can get an “exempt” sticker if you can show driving less than 5,000 miles a year
  3. According to the rules, no you can’t daily drive. But, how the hell are they going to know? As for the mileage, not sure what you are allowed per year…since you can always say you travel to car shows in California several times a year
  4. No motors don’t have to work. I had a classic plate on my 87 Mustang, and air, heat, defrost didn’t work…didn’t even have it hooked up.

for a vehical to legally pass inspection the blower motor ( defrosters) has to work no matter if it is classic or not.

These two statements ruin it for the rest of the people with real classic vehicles. If you daily drive a vehicle with a classic plate, you are a tool. A classic plate exempts the vehicle for reasons to allow them to skate under the radar, one of them being limited mileage (due to the fact that the vehicle may exhibit higher exhaust emissions, but since the usage/mileage is low, it won’t really effect total emissions). If you want to daily drive it, get regular plates & make sure the mileage is under 5000 miles a year.

:bowrofl: at thinking a well worn '84 BMW is a classic car.

most likely you’ll get harassed by someone if you are daily driving classic plates. i wouldn’t do it, for ethical reasons too

and i wouldn’t fail a car for the blower not working. i’d have to look it up in the book but i can’t remember that being in there, plus who the fuck checks that? not me

oh yeah, and techincally you shouldn’t be allowed to get an exempt sticker on your first inspection with that vehicle. even if it was under 5000, no one ever checks tho aka me

You think I consider this thing a classic? I don’t, but it technically qualifies to have the plates. I bought it to fix up and use as a school beater. I knew more than likely I’d have regular plates, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

I’d save the Classic/Historical/Antique Plates for a typical classic, such as the the 67-69 Stang I’ve been dreaming of lately, but that just isn’t in the cards right now.

Not starting nothing but you have to have defrosters to legally pass inspection so if the blower motor doesn’t work then it will not pass . I agree most people don’t check that and if you have a car that doesn’t have them hooked up then I would be pretty shure you take it to someone you know if you don’t do it yourself.

ya technically you do, But all 5 of our mechanics never check the defrosters lol they check lights, horn, and wipers

isn’t their a fail safe, even if you hook up everything wrong it will still work the defroster?

yeah most(if not all) blend doors fail to the defroster on but if the blower isn’t working then all you’ll get is the push of the exterior air from the cowl

not to mention your defrosters use your A/C to dry the air inside the cab. you got moist air blowing out your defrost they aren’t going to do shit

fuck it i will get classic tags for a cavalier

If you keep it under 5000 miles a year and dont have classic plates, you are exempt from emissions check…now does that include the visual check??

i woudl think not since if your not required to get tested for it, then why does the stuff need to be there if your under 5k a year?

word i got 21 years to go…

exempt means exempt. no visual no tailpipe

But according to the Inspection updates if it was equiped with it from the factory it has to have it to pass the state inspection.

amen brotha!

the cars that still require cap tests are such a rip off… they should let you pay 5 bucks for a new cap every year instead of the 20 or more for the fuckin useless test.

i would love to have a answer for this in butler county. seeing as all they want is visual. since i can keep under 5000 miles a year on the car i have pretty easy.

No the vehicle still needs to pass a state visual inspection.

X2 I didnt see this one before

i know my 85 SS doenst have to pass any visual seein as its before a certain year and its mileage exempt. everything thats needs to be there is there
