Is there or anyone have a Detailed list of a Salvage Inspection For NYS?

I read a few thread on here of people going thru the same Salvage inspection situation and I would like to be prepared. Also if you fail do they make you pay the $250 Fee Again?

I would love to have a full list I can check off and get this over with. Thanks!

Any info would be appreciated!

They look for things you wouldnt think about.

They check vins. They check all safety equipment. They look for stolen parts.

I failed the first time (airbag sensor was not present) and I was able to get it fixed and bring it back 2 weeks later to pass the test without a second test fee.

It is a huge pain in the ass and I would never do it ever again.

Same. What a bullshit process. My car was already rebuilt, inspected and approved in Minnesota, but that wasn’t good enough for NY and they still had to make me wait 3 months to get it inspected here before I could register it.

Oh and they won’t let you get it inspected until the ownership is transferred into your name, which means you have to pay the taxes on it at the DMV hoping that you don’t fail the test.

Same…mine was rebuilt in Mass. I bought it…They took all of my money at the DMV and then gave me the info for the inspection.

NYS at its finest.

No shit I didn’t realize NY didn’t honor rebuilt titles from other states that sucksss

Well according to the DMV they wont transfer the title in my name until I get this inspection. I absolutely do not want to go thru this but I got this vehicle for a Very Reasonable price and I want to make sure I have a title with my name on it even if its never going to see the roads.

That doesn’t make sense. If you don’t own the car, you can’t get it inspected.

If it’s a smoking deal, and you KNOW that you won’t need it for about 3 months after purchasing it then go for it. The inspection is a joke. I was in and out of there in 10 minutes. It’s just the paperwork and waiting that is absurd and inefficient.

Well you ended up with an E55AMG at the end so you’d think it was worth it.

That’s what I said I was at a lose for words when the lady told me that. I also even asked a few other workers at the DMV to be certain. Ya I am in no rush what so ever so the money, Time factors don’t bother me it is what it is I guess. I just found it strange I cant even get it in my name before all this. I would like to have a exact list of what there going to look for considering my car is partially gutted as I bought it. So the main reason I am looking for a list is so I can acquire the basics to get this Process Moving along Without any hickups.

They arent going to give you an inspection pass for a car that is not complete. It needs to be road worthy and completely reassembled for them to inspect it.

Not in the end…the E55 should be gone next weekend and on to the next one.

My plan is to reassemble the car to the point it will pass inspection just so I can get the title. That’s Hopefully what It will take

lol I drove in there (dealer plate) with straight pipes, guy says “holy shit this sounds fast” and a few minutes later I was out

the nys dmv website has the checklist. Makes it easy.

yea it basically needs to be 100% (doesn’t need to be painted, iirc)

Anyone have a link to the checklist Iv been looking all day and I can’t find anything. Maby I’m not looking in the right place?

I wouldn’t expect a list except what is required to pass regular inspection. They are mostly looking for stolen parts, so it needs to be together in road worthy form.

They don’t check any NYS safety and emissions items. That is left for the normal inspection. They are really just making sure your not using stolen parts.

That helps clear things up but I still Want to make sure I am prepared for this as much as possible. I mean my car is stripped and I just want the basics here. Should I go down and talk to the guys at Dingen’s and see if they have a list to give me?

So my game plan is to swap a different motor then what came factory. Are they going to Check for engine lights and what not? Bare with me but I don’t want to end up going there a bunch of times wasting there time and mine that’s all. You guys are helping me clear things up but at the same time its too vague for my situation.

Shouldn’t be part of the inspection, but be sure to have a receipt for the new drivetrain. They will likely want to know where it came from to be sure it’s not stolen.

How can I make sure that my vehicle is prepared for the examination?
To prepare

  • make sure that you have the forms, documents and proofs that are required 1
  • check the condition of your vehicle, and make sure it is safe for use on the road (if the DMV investigator determines that the condition of your vehicle is not safe, the DMV will not examine the vehicle)
  • make sure that you complete all repairs and install all replacement parts
  • install a new air bag to replace an activated air bag or an air bag that was removed from the salvage vehicle 2
  • provide all your sales receipts and / or proofs of ownership 3
  • display the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

What do I need to know about the day of the examination?
Arrive on time. If you arrive more than 30 minutes after the scheduled time of the examination, the DMV will not examine your vehicle. You must pay another examination fee of $150 and schedule another examination.
The examination takes about 30 minutes.
Make sure that your vehicle does not block any driveways or roadways at the facility.
You or your authorized representative must

  • drive the vehicle into the examination facility
  • open all the doors, the hood, and the deck lid of the vehicle
  • describe the repair work and the parts that were replaced
  • provide the original receipts for the replacement parts 2 (provide any additional photocopies if they are available; the receipts are returned to you)

Any vehicle identification number that appears damaged or altered can cause a delay with the examination. The DMV can require you to return for another examination on another date.

I found this… That helps clear some stuff up But this brings me to my next question. I don’t have a factory odometer in the car let alone a dashboard. How is this going to affect me. I have the mileage off the title I was given with matching Vin’s for my shell? The car is an 03 But what is Odometer DISCREPANCY?

ODOMETER DISCLOSURE STATEMENT:
Federal and state laws require that you state the mileage of the vehicle described above when transferring ownership. Failure t
o do so, or
providing a false statement, may result in fines and/or imprisonment.
I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, the odometer reading is _______________________ miles, and that this reading refle
cts the actual
mileage of the vehicle described, or that (
check if applicable
):
o
I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, the above disclosed odometer reading “EXCEEDS MECHANICAL LIMITS
.”
o
I certify that, to the best of my knowledge, the above disclosed odometer reading is “NOT THE ACTUAL MILEAGE
.
WARNING: ODOMETER DISCREPANCY
.”

an 03 will probably get the mileage info from the ecu.

Having a dashboard is considered part of being road worthy I’d imagine…
