is there something I'm missing here?

Found this online, engine from a SPEC miata. my question is why the hell isn’t there an alternator or place for an alt belt

because they dont run off an alternator? the dirt modified we run doesnt use an alternator either. it puts parasitic drag on the motor which is detrimental in racing applications. im sure its even more noticeable on a small 4 cyl than it is on a 650hp v8

The modifides we run use small altenators… And quite a few other modifides ive seen use them as well

And I wouldent think altenators noticeably strain the motor at all

On topic: Maybe it uses a magneto?

some mods will use them… we however, dont.

i like that idler setup on the top of the timing belt to keep the lash down at high rpm

yea the modifieds ive worked on never had alternators, they were magnetos IIRC… never ran an alternator on my pro stock either…

so where exactly do the magnetos go?

yea coil packs, the ford version of that engine that went in escorts had a distributor though.

Magnetos don’t work on coil packs as they don’t spin
