Any of you guys having issues with strut rub on your front tires? I was doing a lot of research over on LS1GTO.com and it seems there are a lot of cars with this issue. I went and checked the wear on the front tires of my Goat, and sure enough, they are almost gone on the inside shoulder. I haven’t pulled the tires to be sure but I am betting I have fallen victum as well. Looks like I’m in for new strut mounts and an alignment before I end up driving her again. If you own a GTO please pay close attention to this issue. It will kill your front tires quick on the inside shoulder. Quick being a few thousand miles. This is a safety issue so please pay attn.
Had a mild case of it here. Hasn’t been an issue with the smaller-sized snows.
Just a crazy shot in the dark…Maybe someone left the spring blockers in the springs. (spring blockers are put into the springs when the GTOs are shipped from Australia, keeps them from bouncing and such.):gotme: My buddy had his still on his after he owned it for a few weeks then realized it.
i have also been doing some research on this, and i have not had any issues as of yet. about the only thing wrong with my front suspension, is at low turning speeds, it makes a clunk noise, which is attributed to something with the springs. theres a service bulletin out on that and i’ll have it resolved at some point.
oh and also, GM does not have any kind of resolution for this thats a permanent fix. your best bet is to get some aftermarket struts and bushings and i believe that will take care of the problem.
my stock tires were down to the secondary rubber and belts on the inside when i got the car with ~16k on it. 4 new tires and a front end alignment and i’m doing a lot better now, no additional wear on the inside over the last 5k
Here is some pics from LS1 GTO, THat show the difference between a good and bad strut mount. It is due directly to the way that the cars are strapped down when shipped. Essentially what a bad strut bushing does is allows the top of the strut to move outward twoards the tire causing contact between the 2. This can happen even if the car is with in factory spec on camber [Front camber -0.2° ± 0.5° ± 0.8°]. The numbers I have seen as to where the alignment needs to be is -0.1* - 0* (or 0* - +0.5*, if you have no problem with positive camber). Also the Holden Monaro didn’t have 245s on the front either. Only the American versionss (GTOs) were equiped with tires that wide. I believe they have 225 or 235s. Even with good parts and proper alignment clearence is at its limit. There have also been cases of other premature component failure in the front suspension including; strut bearings, radius rod bushings and even the struts themselves. There is now an NHSTA investigation regarding this issue. Here is a link and some vids with more information regarding this issue. http://rides.webshots.com/album/520157103jcDVac?action=&track_pagetag=/page/photo/rides/cars/&track_action=/Owner/ViewActions/FullAlbum
Yes, the Monaros had 235’s. My 18’s are the 235’s, and I guess I’ll see if they rub when I put them on, too.
I havent noticed anything yet, although I’ve been keeping an eye on it. I guess an investigation is in the works so maybe it’ll turn into a TSB/recall in the near future.
if not, just another reason to go aftermarket

WTF, when did you get a GTO??!

December 26th. I bought myself a Christmas present. Want another Jetta?
LOL, no im gonna buy stock in Sylvania though, if this fukin car blows another bulb im gonna take it to the NF airbase and have em bomb the goddamn thing! C
Cool GTO, any pics?? Stang should be back this spring /early summer too.
Of course, the one other way to fix the strut-rub issue is to get aftermarket wheels… most aftermarket wheels will have less of an offset, so the tire will be further out.
That being said, I’ve got my old Voxx MG 17’s sitting in my garage, if anyone wants them…

Julius, I may take them afterall.
just went outside to have a smoke and checked my front tires (been checking them once or twice a week to be sure that there are no supprises) and looks like I’m getting some decent strut rub issues. Damn… didn’t really want to have to deal with this yet as I’m a little broke.
anyone here ever use spacers? I’ve heard good and bad things about them but no first hand experiance.
damn it

OK - let me know. I’m back in-country now.
As for spacers, I haven’t used them, but the lugs seem long enough for a thin one, which is probably all that’s needed.
Mine is at Culligan right now having them look at:
- A random alternator whine I’ve been getting.
- My passengers side door lock came loose (most likely due to them fucking it up when they took the inner panel off to fix the pealing suede).
- Strut rub.
- Paint chipping off the drivers side door handle trim ring.
The strut rub they said they may not be able to do much with since right now I have my snows on and they don’t seem to rub. I’m getting my new Hankook 212’s delivered this week, so once those are on it may have to go back in.
Fucking domestics. If only Honda would make a 400 hp rwd car with a 6 speed.
yeah im trading mine in this week.
damn and damn… sorry to hear jay
mike why u trading it in?
Mine is going into the stealership asap as my parking brake went out yesterday and my rear end is whining at around 50 mph under accel :wtf:
Jesus.
All you guys are having major problems with nearly brand-new cars.
That’s no good at all.
