"A 21-year-old Toronto man is on life support in hospital after the car he was riding in crashed into a utility pole as the driver apparently attempted a “drifting” manoeuvre yesterday.
Det. Wally Watts of the Toronto Police traffic unit alleged alcohol and high speed once again played a potentially deadly combination leading to the Mitsuibshi Lancer crashing into the pole at Lawrence Ave. and Kennedy Rd. before 6 a.m.
PASSENGER HARDEST HIT
A backseat passenger, a 24-year-old Michigan man visiting family, suffered a broken jaw, while the driver broke an arm.
The passenger sitting up front took the brunt of the impact. The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining if he will survive, Watts said.
Witnesses told police the car was speeding south on Kennedy Rd. Watts said the driver tried to turn onto Lawrence Ave. using a racing technique known as drifting, in which the back end slides out while continuing to move forward.
‘PLOWING IN STRAIGHT LINE’
“And it didn’t work,” Watts alleged. “He’s just plowing in a straight line” into the pole.
Asantha Jayasinghe, 22, of Toronto, is charged with two counts each of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and impaired operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and one count of driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system. "
calling it drifting is so fukking stupid, the kid was drunk and driving too fast and thats it. FWD cars understeer… its what they do when you enter a corner at too high of a speed… it plows
it has absolutely nothing to do with drift or any other racing “technique”
sounds like the government has told the pigs what to make crash incidents into and they are being faggots and calling anything involving a japanese crash either street racing or drifting
The media coverage of this is kinda lame calling out drifting when most people who know the car will understand all he did was understeer after taking the corner to fast.
As for the driver good I hope he gets all that is comming to him I say if your going to be a idiot and try to drift on majoy public roads you deserve to get a ticket. If you drink and drive you deserve to never have you licence given back to you. I myself almost being killed by a drunk driver going 140km/h the wrong way and hitting me head on back in 2004 on Xmas eve.
Bottom line keep it on the track or if you cant help yourself then at the very least go somewhere where you can only hurt yourself and not others.
yeah if he was driving his dads Buick LeSabre it would have been a drunk driving issue, but with 3F3F coming out they’ll spin it that way. Get used to it boys, and if u ever see FF ricers street “drifting” tank slap them.
This is nothing new… well maybe for the drifting guys.
Street racing has seen this kind of media misrepresentation for a loooooong time. Every time there is an accident involving a teenager, and speed (especially if the vehicle is modified), they are going to try their hardest to make it into a street racing accident. Just think, which sells more papers? “STREET RACING TAKES SINGLE MOTHERS LIFE”, or, “SINGLE MOTHER DEAD AFTER TRAGIC ACCIDENT”
the person probably tried ebraking on a turn for the rear end to slid out which is possibble on a fwd car… many of the civic guys i know or trying whatever they can to try and drift… doesnt look so great or as well as rwd of course but its manageable…
any of you even heard of trowing trays on the rear tires of a fwd car? pretty much like trowing your back end onto ice you have almost no control of it… ah well things will only get worse on the streets with these cars… good thing the maxima i got wont be hunted down by cops hahah…
And the media can put any spin on it, as long as kids keep driving like idiots. How about people not give the media what they want, and keep the wreckless driving to the track. Problem solved.

:slap: reckless not wreckless[/quote]shut up douche canoe
I saw that wreck on City TV last night and the car looked as if it had gone head first into a telephone pole. The hood of the car was lodged smack dab in the centre of the pole.
I’m no accident reconstruction specialist but from the pictures that were shown it looked to me like like the car ran an intersection and rode up the oposing curb into the telephone pole directly head-on. That said, I don’t see how the car “drifted” into that situation.
Now that the Conservative govt. is taking its hard stand on street racing you can bet that any trafic incident will be spun in such a way that it works for thier cause. If there were 2 cars involved then would have been a “racing” incident. Since there was only one car involved what better excuse than to say the kid was drifting? Get used to it guys…Stephen Harper has made his intentions clear.
