anyone have any reccomendations on which software to use to monitor/filter internet useage accross the company?
I think Cisco has a software that integrates into out Pix firewall.
we used winproxy also in the past. looking for some options and reviews if you have any.
thanks
I always wanted to know how much info does your typical IT dept know?
Like:
-
Can you see what is on my screen at any time
-
Are there reports to show internet surfing
-
Are there reports when the Internet filtering system blocks you
-
anything else?
What is your company looking to spend?
I have installed Websense at a few clients. The reports take a little getting used to, but it works.
- yes
- yes
- yes
- We IT nerds can do anything we want with your pc.
A typical IT dept would only start monitoring a specific user if they suspect something. If a few other employees complain that you read pittspeed all day, then they can monitor how much time you spend on the web, and things like that.
I don’t hear of a lot of places proactively monitoring web usage. :dunno:
you tell me. im looking for examples.
we liked win proxy because you could see what IP address was where, real time. i think thats the sort of package we’re aiming to get
How large is your organization?
At our company of ~1500 we use MS ISA proxy server with Chaperon proxy management service sitting on top of it. It’s a great, flexible application for monitoring/restricting access.
I’d personally think a proxy server would be the way to go…setup access control in your PIX to only allow outbound access via the proxy, start monitoring filtering and bam your done.
8 stores. probably under 300 computers.
that ISA proxy looks pretty hardcore
Yeah…ISA/Chaperon might be a bit overboard for what you want then. It does rock though. Very flexible, nice app.
I’m sure someone else can recommend a smaller scale proxy app that will do the job for you.
thats where Win Proxy was nice. not sure if you could “block” sites with it, but you were able to sit and watch who was where and call and yell at them if they were not where they should be. IE. myspace
Chaperon is awesome…you can block sites, redirect them, permit/block sites based on definied user groups, along with watching who is where.
