I’ve tuned Jeff’s car before, but this time the setup was a bit more serious. He had us make custom intercooler piping, modify the intake, make a recirculation setup for his Synapse valve, add a solenoid to dump boost if the meth kit failed and more. You can see the piping we made here:

We thought his stock clutch would slip before the car made this much power, but the car only has 11,000 miles on it so it held up just fine. Instead, the car made a lot of power and I stopped at just 22 psi.

This graph shows the 22 psi pump and meth tune, 18 psi pump gas only tune, and the highest stock STI dyno we’ve recorded here. That’s a 2011 STI. As you can see, even a strong stock STI makes similar low end power so this setup offers stock-like response around 2000 RPM and then takes off from there.

To be clear this isn’t a setup I’d recommend as long term reliable on a stock engine. I discussed this with Jeff and I can’t say how long the stock engine is going to put up with this, but the car ran great on the dyno and on the test drive Jeff and I took together.

Sweet numbers. But it’s not an LS1… if he doesn’t plan on beefing up the stock motor…

really? the stock motors cant handle that?

nice numbers though

There is no magic number that you cross and suddenly the stock engine won’t take it. We ran 26-27 psi on pump/meth on a bigger turbo on an 04 STI through years of very hard driving including street abuse and several road course track days at Mosport’s big track. He also drove it all year round and put a ton of miles on it. The car was sold with the engine intact, but that customer brought the car here very often and had us do all his maintenance including frequent spark plug changes, oil changes, checkups etc.

When everything is just right, the stock engine can handle a lot, but all it takes is one little thing to be not quite 100% and then a little knock at this power level or higher is going to crack a piston. Nothing can go wrong with the meth kit, he can’t get bad gas, he can’t boost it without it warmed up, intake leaks can’t be left unnoticed, the MAF can’t get dirty etc. You get the idea. The margin for error at this power level is small.

At the end of the day you’re asking a stock 4 cylinder to make borderline 10 second 1/4 mile power. It’s not going to last forever.

this aint no evo

great work as always mike! that car should scoot
