kidney stones

anybody else ever had them?
went to work today all was good, sitting at my desk when i got a pain in my lower back that was crippling… had another guy take me to the hospital, they pushed in all the right spots and during the urinalisys i pissed all kinds of blood ct scan still shows a small 3 mm stone that they say will pass, but holy shit does it hurt

they SUCK !

i’ve had a couple when i was younger & they were HORRIBLE ! ! cant fit still, i use to pass around alot when i had them

went to the ER for them…told me i would pass them & gave me a strainer to piss thru every time cuz they wanted the stone…i just laughed at the Dr & said i aint carrying that thing around to piss in

this is the one thing I hope I never get!

I’ve had 3 and had to pass them all. The first (and worst) one I had in high school. I was sitting in history class at the end of the day. 15 minutes before the bell rang I got the pain. I managed to hold back tears by figiting for 15 minutes. I ran out the door and straight to the ER.

The 2nd and 3rd were easier to pass even though they were similar in size. 2 and 3 came out within hours of each other.

I think I had a 4th one… It kinda hurt the same way. It left just as suddenly as it started so I might have passed it and not realized.

I don’t wish them on anyone unless I hate them, haha.

Cranberry Juice and water are your friends.

yea they suck, i passed one a few years ago. i feel your pain travis

x2 drink lots of them to help pass it

I had them a couple times. When I was 15 (I had health issues growing up) it hurt so bad I punched a hole in the wall then passed out. Mom found me out cold, pissed blood in my pants.

Don’t drink Pop! They tend to lead to Kidney stones. in mass quantities of course

Meh… pussies… can’t whine when this happens:

For real though, stone are the worst pain. Fuck childbirth. Stones take it all.

Yep, i had 3 of them last year(at the same time).
Started getting some pains in my lower left. After about a week i went to my doctor, who scheduled a CT for The following monday(this was on a friday)
Got a call sunday morning at home. After seeing the results of my blood work taken on friday, they wanted me admitted into the hospital that day.
Ultrasound showed 3 large stones…2 in my left kidney and one at the top of my left ureter. IV dilaudid made the pain go away quite nicely.
Went into surgery the next day and had a stent put in to clear the blockage. Went home the next day, and back into surgery the following week.
They went in with a laser to try to break the stones up. Anyone care to guess how they got the laser in there?:scared:
I ended up in the OR 5 times before i finally got those things out of me. Generally, the largest stone you can pass naturally is 4-5mm. These suckers were all over 10mm.
Not fun.

how long do these take to pass? i was up all night in pain, vicodan does nothing i have drank enough water to fill a bath tub, the back pain has kinda gone away so thats a plus

My first one took about 4 days. I spent 2 in the hospital and 2 at home. I’m sure that every situation is different though.

Depends on the size/ shape of the stone and your plumbing. Only thing that will touch the pain when I have stones is morphine. 3mm is fairly small, so it should pass sooner rather than it will be later.

Vicodin isn’t going to be much help. You need Percocet at the very least. The night before one of my surgeries i was taking 3 percocets at a time just to be able dull the pain somewhat. Just keep drinking the water. If the back pain is going away that means the stone is moving down your ureter closer to your bladder, so that’s a good thing.

i’ve never had one, but my dad used to get them fairly often. turns out it was calcium based. he stopped eating yogurt every day for lunch and hasn’t gotten one since.

I never had one, but my roommate in college got one. I never thought I’d see a 6’6" 275lb man whimpering in pain in the fetal position. They smashed his up via ultrasound and inserted a stent. I just remember those cardboard piss strainers all through the bathroom.

Good luck, Travis.

Had them about 10 years ago. Ended up getting a stent installed. They went in thru my prick. It hurt like hell, but after the stent, things got better. I spent 4 days in/out of the emergency room and then 3 days in the hospital once I was admitted. They went in a pulverized the stones. The reason for the stent was because the stones had tore my urator (sp?) wall.

The stent removal was in the urologist’s office a week later. There was a hot ass nurse who helped the doctor. Needless to say, the turtle was in it’s shell & it was a little embarassing.

They say kidney stones are the closest pain a guy can have that is as painful as childbirth.

Good luck, buddy.

The first time i had a stent removed in the doctors office, it was very unpleasant. The second time, it was excrutiatingly painful. I had contracted a UTI, and that made everything a lot more sensitive.
The shockwave treatment is called Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy. That’s a pretty effective treatment for big stones. Unfortunatly for me, i was not a candidate because my stones were invisible to xrays. The showed up nice and bright on CT scans though. They were uric acid stones, which in many cases cannot be picked up on xrays.
Good luck passing that thing. Just try to make sure you can retrieve it for analysis. Once your doctor knows their composition, he can recommend how to lower your chances of getting more.

I had a nurse in the hospital who had children and kidney stones. She said she would rather choose to pop out a dozen more kids than 1 more kidney stone.

I also know a women who had said exactly the same thing. I’m sure as hell not downplaying childbirth (I witnessed my wife have our two with no pain meds), but I can tell you when I’ve had kidney stones the pain was intense enough that I had trouble walking. I’ve fallen twice while trying to get to the car.
