Kind of a Shop Build thread...

As mentioned in my Prius suspension issues post, due to reasons I don’t care to elaborate on, my current living options are with a mobile home. A nice one, but a mobile home nonetheless. For somebody who loves to do things with his hands, this presents a problem. I was looking around for land that we will eventually build a house on, to put a pole barn on. Figuring the cost and the time all of that would take, I decided that atm that is not an option. So the next best thing was to start looking for a place to rent! My brother was on board as well.

This is the result of the search

A bit run down inside but has all we want and need.

And now I have a bunch of questions!

      • Updated - - -
  1. Does anybody know anything about Wayne compressors? Is this a decent one? It seems to be a 2 stage original pump and a newer 2hp motor.

  2. where does one get metal stock in WNY? Everything from tubes, rods to sheet metal?

  3. what should I be looking for in a welder with a budget up to $400? For instance , stick vs wire fed. I know back in the early days of IN Collision, we used a wire welder with argon. There are 2 210v outlets there.

  4. I’ve tried searching things like The Foundry etc. and I can’t seem to fine any workshops in welding around here. Any ideas where one can get some basic welding training? I welded before but not too much, and usually ended up with burning eyes. The self darkening glasses seem interesting.

why can’t I find space like this? damn you!

anyway, I can comment on a welder within your budget. @checko has a “Real Gear” brand welder from AirGAS…it’s excellent for the budget. I believe it ran $300 or so, then he rented a tank (had it filled obv) and bought a cart with it…right around $400 at that point. It has more adjustment than my Lincoln mig 100, so I sold my lincoln and just use his all the time.

because you don’t choose to live in the middle of nowhere lol. there are so many places like this for rent in Batavia. want to move to Batavia?

also, some of those double wides are pretty nice.

Haha I kind of stumbled upon it. It’s in Wilson, 10 mins drive from my place. Depending on what future options are with it, we kind of want to restore the front, make it look nice. Atm we’re just giving the inside a bath, then a coat of paint. A bit of floor leveling as well

Man, I’d love to buy a place like that.

The Arc and Flame center in Rochester does welding classes. It’s off of 531 near Spencerport, so probably about an hour or so from where you are.

I took a blacksmithing class there. It’s a pretty neat facility. They do individual classes or career training. I plan on going back for welding classes at some point.

We are hoping to buy it at some point but who knows. That second floor will be perfect for a woodworking shop eventually! Thank you!

Am I the only who wants to buy this place and turn it into a home?

haha that’s the first thing that came to mind for me too. it would be all I need if I was single lol. the wife would never go for it.

yep same here.

Better yet, the wall that separates the shop part from the 2 story part has a great big wooden sliding door. Once the owner cleans that part out, it’s ours. Used to be a guns and ammo shop. He said he’ll leave the pool table  after looking at it initially what crossed my mind was “ultimate mancave”

Where did you buy he Real Gear welder?

To answer question #2 , check out Klein Steel in Buffalo. http://www.kleinsteel.com/

So similar to my current shop.

Thank you, I will check them out.

Yes, not sure if dimensions are the same but seems pretty much the same, aside from the 2 story portion.

I second this. Great prices and same/next day delivery.

it’s sold at AirGas, which is a praxair company. I worded that badly in my earlier post, sorry for the confusion.

X2 super jealous!

Have not had much time , i generally come in for an hour or two in between everything else I’m doing. I did some measuring if anyone is interested. The bay area of the shop is 32ft deep by 31 ft wide. The 2 story section is 21ft wide by 32 feet deep, that’s measuring interior space wall to wall. Totals around 1600sq ft

Here’s an interesting one shows the contrast between what is cleaned and what is still in need of scrubbing. Edit: I mean the lift

Had a little progress when I could get the time between classes

Some paint on ceiling and then primer on the walls. Picked up the paint at HD for $30 for a 5gal pail at the discount section. That’s why that particular tint for the ceiling. Don’t ask me why the walls are so sporadically primed. Well to be exact I have some grease scraping to do that I noticed after starting the walls.
