Kubuntu>SUSE>xp

so i just recently made the switch. I found that with SUSE i was running into so many problems with package dependencies that it wasnt even worth installing any software that didnt come included with the os. After chatting with some guys at work about it, i decided on Kubuntu(i like kde). I have been enjoying it much better. Its the easiest thing in the world to install. I have since done away with adept and i am now using synaptic for package management(i was have an issue with adept). It is very easy to install programs once it is all configured. everything is really nice on the eyes and very customizable. I know that the mac users on here can appreciate it. If anyone is fed up with M$ and wants to learn a thing or two, this is the linux distro for you. Figured ide write a short write up on this because i was impressed.

ditch ur m$ software, join the free world

Fedora Core 5 FTW

and of course i’m the one boardjnky4 comes to with questions with linux

but yes right now… ubuntu and kubuntu are very very very nice… and i can’t wait til kde 4 comes out… cause then i’ll be making the switch myself

im running that on my machine. i like it.
we are running debian here on a bunch of other boxes, and it has given us no troubles

never used fedora core or debian. i was pulled into ubuntu/kubuntu by a co-worker. let the distro war continue lol

Its not a distro war…

FreeBSD > *

pfff… Win 98 nothing will ever top it

is it pretty user friendly (for someone whos never run linux before)?

I remember trying to install redhat linux on my machine a while ago but it wasnt very “friendly” to a linux n00b

mmmhmm the adept makes things much much more simple

screw adept, i installed synaptics, much better. but yeah, u gotta setup ur repositories
and once u do that u can just do a quick search(within the program) and install the packages u want

All the GUI interfaces for unix varients now a days are easy/simple.

the SUSE gui was simple to use, but its a bitch when u try to install a package and theyre are about 10 dependency problems. my main thing is that i want easy installation of programs. i dont want it to take 10 hours behind a command line to get vlc up and running, that shit pisses me off.

yea word to the VLC issue in suse… VLC is always a bitch to install

in windoze I just double clicked the install executible :stuck_out_tongue:

what is so difficult about it in linux?

package dependencies

Oh dear god the package dependencies…

Fedora FC5 has a program called yum when you use it to install a program it will also download/install all dependencies…

yeah so pretty much its the same as adept/synaptic(which are almost the same). so u never have problems with package dependencies?

the only time i had an issue was with gcc tools other than that yum extender FTW

u say yum, i say synaptics?? shall we fight to the death?
