LCD E-Brake bypass / relay question

I have a new head coming in and while I won’t be watching dvd’s I want to wire it with a relay for the hell of it. I bought a 40a relay from advanced auto and it has 4 posts not 5 like alot of the stuff I see on the web calls for.
The diagram looks to be fine for my purpose but I’ve never dealt with relays and wanted to get some insight here.

The relay is an optronics a-715.

Thoughts?

Thanks

The terminals are as follows.

30 - terminal for “lights” etc…
87 - power source
86 - switch
85 - relay ground

30 - parking brake wire from head
87 - ground
86 - ground
85 - remote power from head

I wired it up like this and it worked at first. I then went into the menu of the head and when I came back to the movie it was audio only. I’m kinda perplexed at that? Ideas?

Thanks

i’m going to IM you…

EDIT: you’re not on…

Why are you trying to even use a relay? Just ground the remote wire right from the head unit…

what head unit???

All you need to do is ground it, not set up a relay.

Yeah head might help…sorry guys.
AVH-P4000DVD

It needs a signal to go on then off then on again. It’s not capable of just a flat ground. I could do a switch but want to use a relay to make it automatic and simple.

But most ebrake switches just go to ground… I don’t see why you’d need to go through all this rigmarole.

For this model (and many new models) you need to activate the ebrake, then release it, then activate it again for video to work. It’s retarded but it’s how many models work now. A relay will get me around this but I’ve never used a relay prior and am not positive why it’s not working for me. I only have a 4 pole relay like I said, not a 5 pole. Perhaps I just need to wire it different? Maybe I need a 5 pole relay ONLY?

I’ve installed many heads but never one with the ebrake bull$hit like this one.

Thanks for trying tho.

haha, I just did mine on a switch, you can and more than likely run into the problem of the relay activating too fast and the head unit not recognizing it. go for the switch or sell it and buy a kenwood. Plus its not liek you will be watching movies everyday and get annoyed by flipping the switch all the time. that 4 post relay i bet is a start kill relay. it wont work

I was leaning that way now for the number of times I’d likely use it.
Radio shack here I come.

Just sucks I have a relay that’s useless now. Gotta see if I can find the receipt to return it.

Thanks!

A basic SPST nor SPDT relay will not be able to do this alone. You need a programmable trigger module.

Something like this.

how much was the relay???

I think it was like 5-10 bucks. Nothing horrible if I can’t return it.
I really hate the idea of a switch but oh well, I’m not paying $$ for the pulse relay thing-a-mabob.

mine is on a switch works fine, i have the avh-p5900dvd

Yeah I know a switch works fine but I wanted to avoid anything manual. The cars a 5 speed…I guess whats a few extra clicks of a switch in the grand scheme really. LOL

I’m gonna hold off on wiring the switch to see if anyone has a cheap pulse relay they don’t need. I guess this is a good place to start and ask that. Anyone have a late x-mas present they can sell me cheap?

WTF. I tried a 5 pin relay with no luck. Wired a switch which worked fine till I went into the menu to adjust the widescreen mode and then no video after exit. I don’t understand why this is being so retarded.

Any ideas guys? I don’t really want to do yet another reset and have to dick around with the eq again etc…

Thanks

you should only have to flick the switch to watch a DVD. Everything else should work as usual.

It doesn’t, but I don’t watch movies so for now I’ll let it be I guess.
Kinda annoying how it worked till I went and adjusted the aspect ratio in the menu. Now no matter how I work the switch I get sound and no vid.

Sigh. Oh well.
