Also with that 20k you would be paying more for taxes, cost of living, so in the end you would be about even.
Im leaving July 12th.
Why: I want to experience more than just life in hickass Akron, and I am tired of the bs in NY.
Where are you now?
You don’t realize how fast paced and high strung everyone is here until you leave. I love going out west where EVERYONE is chill, seem genuinely nice and down to Earth.
All of this BS about the taxes is non-sense
Did you guys know that initially I pay 3% tax on car purchase, but now EVERY year I have to pay that same price? Yeah, it costs me ~300/year in “highway use tax” for my car.
You property taxes probably cover garbage and recycling pick-up. Mine don’t.
Everything gets paid for somehow.
What do you mean by “cost of living”? I bet in all reality, it’s not THAT much different. Also, when I talk about the NYC area, I really mean LI or any other suburb of NYC.
raleigh, nc
people are DEFINITELY high strung in NY
school.
%10 or New Yorkers say they are leaving NY immediatly.
%11 say they will leave but are waiting for one thing or another.
I bet that you could have this poll anywhere in the world and get those same statistics.
I have lived in Texas for about 8 months now:
Plus:
No state tax at all! I went from ~37% of my gross going into taxes to about ~25%. Yah that is very nice.
Nice weather 6 days out of the week. I was here for one of the worst hurricanes Houston has seen in years and it wasn’t shit. Texas takes care of itself.
Food here is awesome. Forget Mighty ever existed.
Minus:
No family here. It *kinda sucks.
No friends here. This also kinda sucks.
Mexicans
Double edge sword. Cheap labor is nice, because they will cut my grass all year for $250.
I love Houston, it is a 3 hour drive to Dallas, S/A, and Austin. Only a 1 hour drive to Galveston, maybe 4 hours to N/O, 8 -10 to Florida.
The money I SAVE living here is awesome. Plus having a nice job that pays actual $$ is nice. Housing isn’t off the wall at all! I am actually planning on buying a kick ass place this year. Way nicer house then I’d be buying in Buffalo.
To compare if I were working in Buffalo I’d be looking at a 60-80K house. Here I’m looking at a 160-180K house. Oh and they aren’t the “same” houses either. The houses down here in that price range are tits.
Did I mention driving a nice car all year is possible!? Rocks.
It also seems like there is just so much more going on down here. There are art shows, conventions, concerts, etc going on 24/7.
As far as house taxes and car taxes are concerned.
Housing you pay about = to ny. A 175K house runs $3500-4K in taxes. Community fees range from $250-$1K a year depending were you live and what they offer.
You pay %6 on a car when you buy it, inspections are $30 I think and registration is like $12.
Oh, I also forgot to mention that my job is fucking awesome, but not because of the money(even though that is good too).
I get 35 days off/year and I have a fucking window, and a ton of responsibility. I also work at a top ten in the nation hospital where we are deploying a fairly cutting-edge software package to the duke medicine community. Electronic Medical Records on linux ftw
Health insurance is also a shit load cheaper outside of NY
I’d rather live in a shack in Hawaii than a mansion here. If I get that job at Moog, it will keep me here for 5 years, then I’ll either transfer within the company or just go somewhere great.
I don’t mind winters
Whats keeping me here: family, gf (still in school for 1 more year), friends
Reason I want to leave: No jobs, I have to wait every 3 years for a test anyoen can take and even then if I dont score well, I’m fucked for a job for another 3 years. Talking about the erie county civil service exam. So now I’m working a 15k a year job until I move next year or wait another 2 years for the next test.
The only single thing keeping me here is family. I hate this state with a passion for its ridiculous laws and outrages taxes.
I love my Free health insurance lol.
I’m with Paullo though…
I’m not going to work very long. I’ll work until I save up enough to retire with 200 acres, a nice house, 2 corvette and a muscle car, a truck, and something nice like a 5 series for the wife. Then I’m done. I hope to retire around the age of 45 or 50. Fuck this working for your life shit, I want to live.
The weather sucks 6 mos out of the year, during which time the salt eats your car. Taxes suck all year. The job situation sucks. Fees and the bullshit that comes with the government sticking their nose into everything drives me crazy.
Things holding me back: school. As soon as I graduate (less than 2 more years hopefully), I’m out. Somewhere where it’s not shitty at least 9 months out of the year is where I’ll be headed… and hopefully somewhere warmer than that (also thinking So Florida, Texas, NC, or West)
Wont that require like $3 million at minimum to support yourself for a normal lifetime after you retire at that age? lol
Honestly… there isnt anything keeping me here… I love my family, but I have a very small family and we will always stick together, regardless Im sure my parents will leave in the next ten years. Ive been waiting till I get a full year put in at my job so I can either transfer within the company to another city or use my experience to try and get into something else. Keep a room reserved when you buy a house Josh :*
I’ve got no reason to leave and tons of reasons to stay.
I am in WNY because I love my job.
i’m out and it was one of the best decisions of my life.
not that i don’t miss buffalo occasionally but i think i would go insane with boredom if i ever moved back.
buffalo is not that bad, everyone comes back…
