Let me ask you all a couple questions-

Why did you choose the car that you drive?

I’m a VW/Porsche/BMW/Mercedes & Oddball euro and vintage American car kinda guy…

I drive VW’s because
A) easy to work on
B) large network of people who have parts/support when needed.
C) larger selection of engines (diesel for one)
D) parts interchangability-
E) moddibility

I love BMW because they have contantly been upgrading the same basic design they have been using for decades- the closest thing to a perfect automobile out there, albeit expensive

Very similar for the other larger euro brands like MBZ, pre ford Volvo, etc.

and I love alot of American cars up to the 70’s

So let me ask you this- and I don’t mean these in a negative or demeaning way, I honestly am curious, and I don’t get it.

Why do people take crappy cars like cavaliers, ford escorts, etc.(IMHO) and spend thousands if not tens of thousands on upgrades like overkill body kits, huge wheels, shopping cart wings, Yellow and purple interiors, neon, terrible graffics, etc.

I honestly am all for modding cars- to get more performance, or to get some better looking parts like rims that both help handling and look good. i can understand putting money into a car and not getting it back, but to spend all that $$ on a 96 lumina, I don’t get.

I see cars everyday that I just can’t understand why…

is it because you got the car cheap, and can afford those parts because you don’t have payments?

maybe your parents gave you the car?

I don’t know- maybe I’m a bit of an elitist, but I work on all my own crap, and to me, I just don’t get it.

Why?

I bought a Taurus, because it’s slow & ghey.

I bought my car because… i’m a mitsubishi lover. I’ll admit, my parents bought my the car in full for my birthday/graduation. My boyfriend at the time had a 2nd gen, so i needed something newer then him. I wouldn’t get any other car besides a silver eclipse because i’m stubborn. I love the look (even though a lot of people hate it) and they are easy to mod. I get compliments on the look of the car all the time. First car i had my eye on so i had to get it i guess.

I’m converted to lean tward american cars in general, howver i will not pass up a good AWD car for a dd and would love a nice new STi for a DD.

I drive Chevy because
A) easy to work on
B) large network of people who have parts/support when needed.
C) large engines that make power out fo the box
D) if i spend 15k i’m going to smash most other car with the same ammount of money in them

and I love alot of American cars up to the 70’s

So let me ask you this- and I don’t mean these in a negative or demeaning way, I honestly am curious, and I don’t get it.

Why do people take crappy cars like VW’s and mod them? i mean who wants to put small tires on wide rims? who wants to try to make a four thousand pound car try to go anywhere? who likes to spend 10 and only make 350 WHP? silly IMHO. and all those eletricial problems! who could stand that. now lets talk just about parts replacement! small BS things … thousand bux! rediclous.

I see cars everyday that I just can’t understand why…

is it because you got the car cheap, and can afford those parts because you sell weed?

maybe your parents gave you the car?

I don’t know- maybe I’m a bit of an common senseist, but I work on all my own crap, and to me, I just don’t get it.

Why?

first off, let my just say that you may feel free to put me into your ‘pointless modding’ category because I am modding a pickup truck. that said…

I chose my truck (1998 Dodge Dakot R/T) because:
a) i like trucks
b) the R/T isnt something that you see too often
c) I like the versatility of a truck and i also like going fast
d) its kinda :snky: people dont think trucks are usually fast

i dont have any crazy graphics, all i have is the standard R/T badging in red, which was factory, and the red R/T stripe which is reminiscent of the old Mopar muscle cars (and i think it looks DAMN sexy!). as far as bosy mods, all i have is a rollpan bumper which was on there when i bought it and a tonneau cover. if i were to ever get rims, i would get Viper rims.

theres so much potentail in that 360 engin. there are dakota R/T out there running in the 11s without spray. IMO, i would rather spend 30 grand on buying a Dakota R/T and modding it than spending 30 grand on a lightning. and in the end, the dakota is gonna smoke the lighting.

and i agree with you: if people would take alllll that money they dump into thier cavalier, they could have such a nice car. of course, there areexceptions, like a SRT-4 or a Cobalt SS, now that is a little econo-box thats worth doing stuff to. but otherwise, i totally agree with you. and if you think german cars are easy to work on, you have obviously never worked on a Porsche 944

ha this is ridiculous…that’s a very good list of reasons to buy your car, and i look at it…and realize that the last one on the list is the ONLY one that could ever apply to my car…

i think it’s probably because i didnt know much about the 300zx until i got a ride in realdeal’s, and then saw josh’s…and became very interested and started reading more into it and learning more about it…and like crack, i was addicted…

i bought my car because i think it makes me look cool.

:word:

and im a ricer.

I think a lot of people mod cheap-as-dirt cars because they have to work with what they got. They were probably bought/given a cheap car and then decided they didn’t like the shift knob, then they had to have a CD player, then a sub would really help the sound, they keep making money and then a CAI would be kind of cool, tint would make it a little pimp, a spoiler would be an easy bolt on…

Then before you know it you’ve got a turbo shit car with a bumpin system and a full body kit.

  1. Semi Easy to work on.
  2. Can’t beat the out of the box performance.
  3. Aftermarket is growing everyday.
  4. Everyone thinks my firebird is a V6 :snky:
  5. I have a lot of friends who have modded LS1s so its easy to get help if I need anything
  6. 350rwhp with bolt ons with a auto tranny
  7. I like the looks of my car…and will like it more once I throw a WS6 hood on this year…and eventually front lip/side skirts.

“and if you think german cars are easy to work on, you have obviously never worked on a Porsche 944”

Actually, I’ve had 3 944’s (rebuilt 2 of them) and a 924… wasn’t that hard to me…but the timing belt was a PITA… I can sure see people being turned off by them, but they handle soooo nice when set up properly. I guess I’m biased since I grew up with German cars, there is a certain commonality among them, so I think it makes them easier (for me) to work on.

i bought my car because i wanted to buy a compact that no one around here would take to the extremes i had planned on taking it, or many people anywhere for that matter. when i bought the car there was not alot of aftermarket for it, but alot of talk of it, and i hadnt seen any around being modded. i like to be different

I have owned VW’s all my life and even had a Honda as a DD. I just cant see myself in any other car then a German car.

And I like the group of people that are inn the euro scene. But every now and then a dip shit comes into the mix. But that goes for every group. I also agrre with people spend in XXXX amount to make a piece of shit even look more like shit…

Also I bought my Audi because I like how quattro works and feels. I love when people say Audi/VW are slow. If I wanted a fast car I could have easly bought a fast car hands down. I guess some people just don’t get it. Not everyone wants to go fast in a straight line in a gutted out car… It’s just not me…

haha kinda reminds of somethiong that happened to me last summer:

i raced a guy in a camaro with a lightly modded 305 and we were dead even. he looks at me at the next light and goes ‘aw shit man!! u got the Viper motor in that thing?’ and i just smiled and said "nah, its jsut a 360 V8’ then when he asked me what i had done to it and i told him just exhaust (which at the time was all i had), the look on his face was absolutely priceless

I bought my car because i wanted something different…i was kinda sick of having a mustang…and on top of that…a ford. It fell apart all the time. Always had to work on it. I wanted something with more luxury and somewhat quick…and i have always loved M3’s…so i thought…“why the hell not” so after months of looking around…and finally selling my car…i bought an ///M

the downside…EVERYTHING! is expensive…parts…labor…and having a 95…there is a bunch of maintenance that usually has to be done

upside…
-deff an awesome car
-fun to drive
-95 is known for suspension
-OBD 1*

  1. relatively easy to work on (found that out this winter ;))
  2. great power off the showroom floor
  3. can hit 500+ rwhp with for as little as $2000 in mods
  4. really comfortable to drive
  5. love the styling of the car
  6. not too many around this area
  7. oh and how could i forget, blower whine?

I bought the vw because

  1. it is reasonably good looking
  2. it gets good gas mileage
  3. fairly reliable

I bought the FD because

  1. i like fixing things
  2. i enjoy frequent trips to the gas station
  3. i like when my car makes a lot of power out of 1.3L of displacement
  4. it looks ok too

I grew up in a Ford family with both my parents working at a Ford dealership. My dad used to bring home Mustangs and SHO’s when I was a kid and I’ve always had a soft spot for them, hence the reason for owning both.

I bought my Mustang when I was 16 because it was what I had always wanted (realistically) when I was a kid. At the time it was easy to modify both financially and mechanically. I still enjoy the car but have also outgrown the love for it I used to have. Where a majority of people with Mustangs are all about building a drag car, I chose to leave mine as a nice and clean daily cruiser. Now if I had more money…

I bought the SHO during college because I was sick of beater pieces of shit and wanted something with some space for hauling crap, power, and good mpg. It was also cheap to buy and despite what everyone thinks is very easy to maintain.

I pretty much only drive these cars now because they’re both paid for…

I hear what you’re saying about people modding cars that make you ask why…and I often find myself asking that too, but then remember the fact I drive a Taurus and stop asking questions. My only beef with people altering their cars is when it looks horrible…and I CAN’T STAND bolt ons like a muffler and an intake on the econobox cars…that’s all from me.

In all the years I have never had any big electrical problems. And I have owned VW’s since 1994.
My Mitsubishi Montero on the other hand, now lets talk about a POS with electrical problems that would make a electrican scratch his head. Tail lights like to work when they want to. Door locks will freak out and just start locking and unlocking on their own without me touching a thing. Back gate lock works at times. Dome light will work every now and then along with a door adjar chime that just goes off when it wants too. And my dash looks like a X-Mass tree…
Granted the truck is a 91 but I have owned a 91 Jetta and a 90 Civic that where in much worse shape then the Mitsubishi is in, and they did not have close to the amount of problems put together the Motero has. And I have never seen rust spread so fast on a car like the Montero…
I dont think I would ever buy a Mitsubishi again even if it’s a beater. And I know things have come along way since then but all the electrical crap I hear about 3000GT’s a so on… No thanks…

Changed FormulaLS1’s to suit my reasons.
