I get my regular plates stored every year, and when I had vanity plates never had an issue with them.
One year they told me I could just turn them in and get new plates but I said that I wanted to keep the ones I had (the old style) and it was no issue. I live in the middle of no-where so I’m sure they store less plates means less likely they get lost but I’ve honestly been doing it for a good 10 years without an issue.
Just make sure your inspection isn’t going to go more than 15 months out of date with the plates stored or they’ll make you inspect the car before you can register it. Pretty stupid because how are you supposed to get it inspected if you can’t drive it?
Bump. Went to Eastern Hills DMV, gave them my plates and 4 quarters, got a receipt, insurance premium dropped $200 by removing liability. Everything went better than expected!
You must have crazy high insurance. My tbSS is only $327 (6 months) for 300,000/500,000 with full coverage, rental, and roadside. For me it wouldn’t be worth taking it off plus if the car is stolen your shit out of luck.
I still have comprehensive on the BMW obviously. This is also for 2 vehicles (other is a 2000 Outback with full liability, comprehensive, collision, glass, rental car, roadside, etc etc. $345ish for 6 months for 2 cars.
If you’re happy with doing it then thats all that matters.
I’ve done it before and honestly it wasn’t worth the few dollars I saved. My time is worth more to me than having to go back to the DMV and make some calls.
You probably had minimal savings. Honestly it was a much easier process than I expected. Had the plates turned in and phone call complete all on a lunch break. I’ll gladly take a 15 min ride to save some dough.
