can you lighten a stock flywheel?
well, obviously you can lighten anything, but is it advisable?
I ask because I have a flywheel that was only in a car for 18 miles. It’s practically brand new. I’ve gotten it for free (along with a clutch), so I was thinking about having it lightened and letting Amanda learn to drive stick in the Prizm, so I have an excuse to change the clutch and flywheel when she’s finished.
thoughts?
i tihnk you can but a fly wheel is balenced so i wouldnt recomend it
sell it and buy a real lightened flywheel, i dont think your going to be able to make the flywheel you have drop from its weight (say 30lbs) down to about 10lbs by removing meteral, it would probably get really weak and might break or something like that.
you can not significantly lighten a stock flywheel without greatly reducing its structural integrity. as is stated, if you want a light flywheel, buy an aftermarket unit.
sissies - take the flywheel and hook it up on the lathe and away you go, keep cutting until it’s about 8lbs.
x2
but honestly… a common upgrade for a 2002+ vw is an oem flywheel from 88-90 vw shaved + balanced…
