There has been more and more hype of the Linux, esp Ubuntu.
Has anyone tried to switch? What was your reason to switch? Did you switch back?
Any reasons you still are with Windows?
Personally, I have tried to switch. I know semi advanced Linux (mostly Fedora) for servers but for the desktop, I can’t seem to get away from the Windows XP OS. It does what I need to, I can keep it secure and if you keep up with normal system maintenance, it runs clean for quite a long time. Plus my dual video cards/monitors and other graphical applications such as gaming are a real pain to get working on a Linux system properly.
Not interested. Not because I don’t think it’s a worthwhile venture but for the fact that I have been WFL so far, I don’t want to lose anything I have learned going to another type of OS. I don’t want Linux pushing anything out.
I like ubuntu for certain things, but i’m still in windows 95% of the time. Ubuntu is such a bitch with drivers on my laptops, and i had it running 100% then went from 7.04 to 7.10 and all kinds of shit is fucked now… I removed it from one laptop and still have dual boot on the other but find myself staying away from it more and more.
eh, I’ve used it (and still run it on a VM) but IMHO, it’s too much of a pain in the ass for simple tasks (drivers for one). If it was a little more refined, I’d probably use it more often.
that and a majority of the software I use isn’t supported on linux. I’ve tried using wine with limited success
I ran it a lot in college both for fun/to learn, and because I sucked at teh hardwarez and my computer was unstable as shit running winblowz. Mostly Mandrake.
It’s just not worth my time now. I have to use windows at work and i have no reason to use it at home. My home PC is stable enough to run XP without rebooting for weeks on end.
The stuff i learned just playing with it in college has been helpful though. I’m glad I forced myself to get a basic working knowledge of it.
OS X on the desktop, the servers are a mix of CentOS w/ SELinux, Red Hat, FreeBSD, and hardened Gentoo.
If I didn’t have a Mac I’d probably run Ubuntu since there is so much support out there and it really seems to be more polished than any other Linux desktop.
