I just moved out literally 2 days ago. As some of you may know, I moved into “The Ritz” with Walker, Newman, and JAM. I love it, but I’m still getting used to this whole moving out on my own deal.
Does anyone have any tips? Such as money saving ones? And where can I go to pick up cheap products from chairs to shampoo and anything of the sort.
Anywho…I’m having a god damned blast!
And I can now safely make the change from the backseat of my Jetta, to my bed
Eat Ramen Noodles as much as possible = more money for other shit. Food costs can be a huge factor in your budget if you don’t keep an eye on them and keep them in check.
Drink water. Tap water. Buy packets of Kool-Aid if you get bored with water.
Use compact flourescent light bulbs to lower electricity bills, especially in places where the lights are on the most often.
Keep the thermostat turned down, or better yet, use a programmable one to keep the temp even lower when you aren’t home.
steal a neighbors cable
wire each of your breakers in teh fuse box into a diff neighbors power supply, that way everyone else in the building pays your electric bill and noone notices a big jump in price
order cable internet and when they come to hook it up offer the install guys beer and something to eat and they’ll hook ya up with free tv cable too. Sloppy joe and mac’n’cheese are your friends learn to love them. buy a good comforter for your bed so you dont have to crank the heat once it gets colder.
Cooking more at home saved me a lot of money. Luckily your entertainment costs should be relatively non existent since myspace girls are cheap. Borrow movies from the library instead of renting or buying them, and you could make a copy if you wanted to watch it again. I set up a simple excel spreadsheet to track my monthly bills.
Pay off any credit card debt as soon as possible if you have any. Next start paying off any other debt that has an end (i.e. car loan). Then, start saving enough money so that , in case of an emergency, you have enough to survive for 6 months.
Edit: Wear your cloths a couple times before washing them, unless they are excercise cloths. Let Newman drive if you go places together so you don’t waste your gas.
I go out to eat as often as possible, its somehow cheaper to for me to be instantly gratified with food then to go shopping and buy a bunch of stuff I will never cook. Have roomates…living alone is boring and expensive. Other than that, network your computers, share porn and have fun
I spent about $1000 at Ikea this past summer and furnished not only an entire living room, but also a good part of my office/studio. Mind you, this is with stuff that might be over your budget. Ikea is the bomb.
Also, like everyone said, cook for yourself, and if possible, have the whole household chip in and make meals for everyone. Living as a team will help you all prosper as a team. I know, that sounds all philiosphical, but for real, use the fact that you have several people living together. Create a zero tolerance on things being out of place. I just spent the entire day cleaning my house because I get lazy and leave things sitting around. If you could get all the housemates to follow such a code of conduct, you’d have one nice apartment. I live alone with my dog, and if I could teach him to help chip in around the house, I would.
Respect your neighborhood. K Cuv can vouch for this little story of mine. We have a neighbor around here who calls the cops on you if you drive too fast. (gotta go, no time to finish…)
