Looking for some career advice from computer guys

programming is the suck, i got my degree two years ago and i havent touched a line of code in nearly a year

so what do you do??

transfer to RIT and go into the networking and sys admin program haha… then take all the information assurance classes u can to get a concentration in security… thats where i am right now. 3rd year at RIT and working a pretty sweet coop/internship. great pay for no degree and meeting tons of people. got an interview lined up for microsoft friday also. but yea man get outa CS while u can… any IT/informatics/netwroking/sys admin knows some programming… but nothing to shake a stick at. they know the theory and at one time could program in whatever language they knew. and the key is … its not what you know its who you know.

im def not gonna get accepted to RIT, i have dug myself a grave and cannot get out of UB pretty much. Im gonna make and appointment at The School of Informatics. Thanks guys its been a ton of help

or do what i did, didnt step one foot into college, learned it all by hands on, and got a great job!!!

eehhhhh, while i dont think there is too much wrong with that, im too far into college to just ditch it now, it would be throwing away a lot of time and a lot of money. Im pretty sure im going to switch my major

but your old… and it used to work that way. I don’t think its that easy anymore.

ohh i understand, ur right if you have been there continue it, i just thought/think college is a waste of time for me, when i can learn IT stuff in the real world, rather than some jerkoff professor teaching it to me

im not old, and what do u mean easy?, for me its easier to learn security stuff by actually messing with it in the real world.

i learn better tha way.

can you just pick up an minor in CS or even an AAS?

hollar me too

learn networking and security and you will get a job, become a programmer and work at bestbuy

yeah i could, but i still need a major.

lol bestbuy, classic

yeah im not looking to waste time in college to get a job at best buy, ide rather install car stereos at circuit city for a better wage and no training

Everyone could learn better in the real world… but its hard to get that experience without paying for school first. “Help Wanted, Experience Required”…sound familiar?

It is not easy to be self taught and get a job. Its that simple. Someone with a degree and 1/2 the know-how will get the job before you.

I know a couple self taught coders… they suck. Sure they read some books, did some research and can get some lines of code to work, but its shitty, sloppy, and inefficient…

I speak only from personal experience, and the experience of those more experienced around me. :stuck_out_tongue:

:word:

yea anyone can have a piece of paper, but experience is invaulable

experience is valuable. :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah agree there
