Low varying idle on 2006 Xterra

I have a 2006 Xterra, automatic w/ about 50,000 miles on it. The idle has been low on it for about a year now and varries quite a bit between 500 and high 600 rpms- should be 750rpm. I cannot get the engine to idle normally, and am hoping someone has a direction to point me in. I have changed the plugs already and ran injector cleaner, and there was no difference with either of those. There are no codes coming up on my scanner either. Once in a while it will idle steady, but then be off by the next time you stop. Not really modded, k&n panel filter and dynomax muffler. Any ideas?

Does it shake when it is idling or even at start up?

It will shake when the rpms get real low around 500-600 but if they are closer to 700 it doesnt really shake. It’s really noticable though because some of the heat shield straps broke on the exhaust, so the shields rattle like hell when the rpm is low. At start up it is fine until it warms up and then the idle will drop low. When you come to a stop the idle will hang at ~750 for a few seconds and then get lower and lower, and sort of surge up and down in that range.

Once the idle gets that low if you lightly push on the gas, the tach needle doesnt initially move, it hesitates then sort of jumps up to the appropriate rpm. Seems like the tb might be sticking or is no longer set properly at idle.

The search function is jacked, otherwise I could point you to where to download the factory service manual. I’ve got it on my work laptop, I’ll email it to you.

Nissan trucks have an issue with the EGR valve. Locate it, pull the vacuum lines off and spray some carb cleaner in the lines as well as the valve. Reconnect and start the vehicle. If it goes a couple hours without dropping in RPM’s then you can be certain the the valve is fucked and you need to remove it (a fucking chore on most of their trucks) and either replace it ~$250, or clean and rebuild it. The solenoid is the most common culprit according to the dealership when I brought my truck in for the same issue.

I gave up on caring as it is such a PITA to remove the valve and replace it but it gets fucking annoying as the truck shakes at a stop light. I feel bad for my motor mounts.

To download the service manual join nissanforum or nissanforums.com, can’t remember off the top of my head which it is. Also do a search on those boards for EGR valve and you will see what I am talking about.

Really? Last I looked nissan forums had died. Unless it’s a different board that I used to be on.

I’m trying to email the 2007 FSM in a zip file, but it’s 65mb so I don’t have a lot of hope.

thanks guys, I’ll check that out this week when i have some time.

Well it appears the problem was actually the PCV. I removed that and cleaned it out, idle immediatley rose back to where it should be. However now I have a CEL after removing the intake manifold…have to find out what that’s for now. But at least I have a smooth idle again.

It must be that time of the year for Nissan trucks my Knock sensor just took a crap and hesitates slight on take off. Sure the knock sensor is easy to get to but The damn super charger is in the way. I saw a thread on another board that will let me relocate the knock sensor using one off a Maxima since it apparently has a longer plug lead.

But I would love to get my hands on one of those service manuals. They always come in handy!
