I am having the problem of rough idle. The rpm stays steady at 700-800 but the engine is shaking and literally the whole car shakes. But once the rpm goes 1200+ the shaking stops. But I can still feel some kind of vibration on the pedals, which were not there earlier.
So far I have looked into the following, put in parts etc, but still no luck solving the problem:
Changed spark plugs, wires, distributor cap
Mechanic cleaned throttle body/butterfly valve & reset the idle rpm by the manual
Checked the fuel injectors & found one injector to be bad - changed that injector
Checked the codes and found 2 codes - one for oxygen sensor and the other was the speed sensor (situated under the shifter), changed the O2 sensor. My mech told me that speed sensor should not affect the idle - so has told me - not necessary to bother with that (If anyone see a relation between this sensor & idling pls let me know)
I am not sure what to look for…Some one pls help
I was present at the club meet and during the meet I did ask some members about this problem and some told me that it was the EGR valve - so I told this to my mechanic & he clamped on the tubes isolating the sys…but still no luck.
Did your mechanic check your timing? Does it shake or vibrate? If it vibrates and you can’t find anything michanical it could be your harmonich balencer or the fly wheel/flex plate could have lost a wieght putting it off balance.Does it run ok? Has your gas milage gone down etc… if so it could be crank angle sonsor, bad distributor or any thing that has to do with the timing. Good luck !
if you have a bad shake in the engine, make sure you are firing on all 4 cylinders. do you have a loss of power as well, more noticeable at higher speeds?
I tried some of the stuff suggested - pls correct me if I removed the wrong part…
I tried removing the MAF (Assuming it is after the filter in an aluminium mount) & the engine dies…So I guess its working. There is another sensor right on the plastic box where the air filter fits. I removed it but no change in engine running. I assume it senses the temperature of the air ??
And about the IIAC - What does it stand for? & where is it in the car? Help pls…
This weather is also getting cold & I don’t have a garage to work…so its becoming a pain in the ass.
About the harmonic balancer - by any chance is there a way to find out with out dismantiling the trans?
that is your IAT sensor, it is used for the car’s on board diagnostic, and will not affect the performance of the vehicle (at least thats what the FSM says). i left mine unplugged, but its cause i have a cone filter, and the car perfoms fine. since you are running the stock intake, i strongly suggest you leave the sensor plugged in, it is not the cause of your problems.
if you have a low RPM idle issue, check the tension of your throttle cables, and tighten them if neccessary. I did to correct my idle problems, and although the motor still idles a little rough when cold, a blip of the throttle can usually set the idle rpm’s back at about 750-800RPM’s
never took apart the tranny, so i can’t help you out with that Bill
hey guys, i seemed to develope the same problem overnight. Happened thursday, me Nik and Pete went out and beat the crap out of the cars, and it was fine all night long, bring it home and it sits until thursday at 3:30. Rough, goes between 700-600, then back up. The whole car viborates, especially underload below 1500-2000rpm. The strange thing is that you can still feel the vibration at higher rpms. I have also noticed that the exhaust is much louder and sputters.
So far i’ve changes the coil, wires, rotor cap, and plugs and no difference. I also filled up with 94, thinking it might be bad gas. I’m checking the timing tomarrow, but any help/ideas would be great.
well i check the compression all are well over 120. The exhaust leaks at the cat, sputtering here and at the tail pipe.
Harmonic Balancer? Hmm. I’ll have to test that, right now i’m leaning on timing, but it’s always a thought.
Also, the underdrive pully thing is a myth, it has not been proven yet.
well thanks to everybody who helped me out with this, especially Pete. It turns out that my computer got fried when i started it up on thursday. Well i swaped it with my extra one and it went like a bat out of hell.
I was the one who started up this thread. In my car the problem seem to have disappeared on its own. Happened about a week back. So have left it as is. But I do feel the vibration on my pedals? Do you guys feel any vibration on your pedals? As far as I remember I didn’t used to have it.
For Black Apple it was the computer. So possibly I have the same problem but I don’t know how it stopped on its own.
I would like to change the computer in my car just to see whether I find any difference. Is it a quick job? By any chance any of you happened to have one sitting idle?
