For the last 2 oil changes on my LS1, my dipstick has been reading WAY over filled (even when only 4 quarts have been added)…
I see that the manual calls for 5.5 qt, can anyone verify? I have only put in 4 and change at the moment…

5.5 quarts is what mine takes.
Gotcha, I just hate playing the guessing game, like to see it on the dipstick
A lot of people run 6qts…
people use 6qts becase they are scared that the oil pump will suck air when they are hard in the corners. Look out for those on ramps!
5.5qts is standard.
my car takes 6
I have a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, anyone else run that?
I put in 6.
5-3/4
Does anyone else use water to wash out the old oil first? I want to clean the engine up
Kidding…kidding…
If four quarts is reading over filled in your LS1 then I’d have to say you have the incorrect dipstick or you aren’t getting all the oil out in the first place.
^It is all coming out, and eventually over time the dipstick agrees with the amount put in, but others have told me they have ran into the same problem…
standard Lucas Oil Stabilizer is much to thick for an LS1 or any Gen III engine that is in good shape. Lucas synthetic on the other hand will work.
A dipstick is not a magical oil level reading device…
Think about it…
The one on my f150 was off by about half a quart…
That doesn’t mean just add extra oil lol.
Some people put in 6 quarts because they run an over-sized filter. If you use a standard filter 5.5 quarts is fine.
5.75 on change, and add the next morning after racing the car to keep the level up. When it was a stock motor, with the factory PCV valve still, and LS1 valley pan. It was burning about a qt every 1k miles. Beat on LS1 run the best
I use the K&N HP2006 filter which allows me to run 6 quarts
Mine doesnt burn anything im lucky. I use 6 qts and it comes out perfect on the dip stick.
you also drive like a pansy.
i run a full 6qts… i have a turbo to feed too, and that much more heat to shed. if i go with an oil cooler, i would assume that’s another half quart or so.
you will be fine with the full 6qts. stock ls1’s do burn a little oil over time, but nothing to be worried about
