LSD in front-drive platforms vs. winter driving

When you say vari-ramp are you referring to a 1.5 way LSD? I’ve never heard that term before. However I’ve driven both LSD and non LSD cars in the winter and the car with the LSD was much better IMO.

1, 1.5, 2, etc way term is how the diff reacts on accell/decell

Variable ramp is just talking about a design parameter of the pressure ring setup in some LSD diffs(mostly salisbury styles). Vari-ramp setups tend to be much smoother in their “workings” and more predictable and consistent in how they shift torque around to the wheels.

I know the differences, I was just wondering if you were referring to the ramps for the pinion shaft. Got it now. What are the advantages of a clutch type LSD vs gear type like a Quaife?

Quaifes/Kaazs arent preloaded so they need a difference in speed to start working. It usually makes them herky jerky on the street and at speed/on track, they tend to go 100% open as soon as the inside wheel becomes unloaded enough.

good info

Clutch LSD’s have smoother power transfer, tunable(most are anyway), offer better power on drivability, etc.

They both have their pro’s/cons It’s really just down to your setup and what you’re doing with it. Quaifes are damn reliable and work well in most applications, especially going in a straight line. Don’t need to be rebuilt, etc, etc.

Personal preferences really. Others will swear by ABT’s and that’s fine

Do they make Queefs with decel locking? I’ve never seen one.

Btw, successful unintended thread hijacking, good stuff team.

Not to turn this into a big time discussion but what are your opinions on the Wavetrac gear based unit?

+1. yeah the clutch LSD’s have soemthing working against wheelspin from the get go(the pressure ring preload). ABT’s need to reference that wheelspin before the internal guts start shifting around in order to transfer torque.

Tag, you’re in

**edit…no, no lockup that i’m aware of.

No opinions, never seen/driven a car with one.

One thing I forgot to say is that the queef’s(nice clark) are not actually LSD’s. They don’t slip internally at all.

1320, fail.

Hm, I’d like to hear some input on a Wavetrac, supposedly they apply torque on decel and are tunable. I doubt anyone on here has one though. Either way… Cobalts suck.

haha agreed

Quick look shows it to be an ATB style diff but with a lobe pressure ring so that when torque load goes to zero on one wheel(like a lifted inner wheel on cornering) the pressure ring locks the diff so power is still applied to the wheel with traction.

Step in the right direction for certain. How well it performs…guess you’d have to buy and comment for yourself

KAAZ arent preloaded? I had a 1.5way and it always seemed to be locked. Traded that for a ATS Deftforce 2 way :stuck_out_tongue:

yayy drifting

that’s what I have in my GLI and it works great.

yeah for 99% of the public the quaifes are great.
