if a FWD car is boosted, and making lets say 350 whp with an LSD, really good suspension, sway bars, ect. the whole 9 yards…would it still break loose coming out of a corner in boost (15psi) really bad? or would it hold semi-decent?
im debating on weather or not to go to the next level with the focus, but i dont want to lose the agility the car has on curvey backroads and such. i dont want a car thats only fast in a straight line and not be owrried about losing traction in a corner and sliding into a ditch
You’re really going to need to post a lot more info to get an informed opinon on that. Tire model and size would be a good start, how much whp and torque the car makes across the RPM range is very important, the speed you’re cornering at is also vital. Cornering at 30 mph vs 80 mph makes a big difference for traction. What kind of LSD?
Without any info I’ll say you’ll probably still spin a lot under 50 mph on a normal size street tire.
Well I have some of the credentials you are asking about, (325whp, terblow, Quaife LSD) but my car has a solid rear axle.
However, the LSD shows more performance in the twisties than at the strip. Tight, low speed cornering being the highlight, you hammer on it and the outside wheel really pulls your ass around the corner. It actually has a slight RWD feel to it swinging you around if you modulate the gas. Obviously if you hammer down, you understeer into doom unlike a rwd. But for a good driver, you will notice that…
Now onto high speed cornering. Going around the corner with no throttle the car feels the same, but you can really put the throttle down way earlier. The entrance to the 400 from the 90 is a prime example of this. Decreasing radius turn and at the end you have a nice straight that you need to get on and before I had the lsd…I had to wait untill the steering wheel was straight before I got on it as not to slide accross traffic, but now, as soon I see the end of the turn coming I can lightly get on it and by the end of the corner it is all there…boost and everything.
i was going to use a torsen t2 or a quaife in my car if o go this far, with 17"rims and azenis possibly even radial drag tires or something sticky like that, i love taking my car down twisty/hilly roads and dont want to ruin the capability of doing that by going craay with whp. prolly cornering around 40-50mph ish. about 320-350whp and 300-330tq. 205-45/17 on the tires
At 40-50 MPH you’ll need to use some control. You can’t just mash the pedal and turn the wheel to get through corners. If you want a car that you can pretty much just floor all the time, why add power? If you want power you have to understand that you can’t use all of it, all the time. Just get used to using some control with the throttle.
An ATBD is going to improve the performance of your car. If you feel traction is an issue with your HP ist going to be worse with an open diff then it will be with a LSD. TQ steer will increase a littel as the diff seraches for traction between the two wheels instead of just roasting one of them.
what is an ATBD…sorry noob to this. the car has an open diff stock, and i wanted to get an LSD to aid in traction esp. for 1/4 and such, but i also love twisties, so im debating on building up my focus with LSD and such or to sell and go with AWD.
I’m going to guess: ATBD = active torque biasing diff?
BTW, having a FWD car with a helical gear limited slip (basically a torsen), I’d have a really hard time going back to a car that didn’t have it. It really does pull you around the corners amazingly well. I think for FWD applications, a true 1-way diff is the way to go, so it locks under power application, but acts like an open diff when off the throttle, allowing the car to be more neutral.
Yeah, the torque steer can sometimes be a little annoying, but you do get used to it, and it really only happens when you are really hammering on it
Its not really going to help your 1/4 times alot. But it will make your driving more pleasureable. It is definatley an improvement. Go as Mr. Smith what happens when you cruise around on a shitty diff with lot of HP. Quaifes are expensive but you cant beat a lifetime warranty, regardless of mods or driving habits: ie racing.
I’ll agree with most of what’s been posted. However, I think 40 mph on street tires, even with an LSD, if he’s pushing 320 whp, he’ll definately haave to use some control, because he’ll be able to easily break the tires loose at those speeds. I have a helical LSD, and man it’s got real nice feel on the street, still very easy to create understeer with too much power and breaking both loose. On race tires, holy shit. Torque steer like crazy, takes a bit to get used to coming off a long sweeping turn. But it’s damn nice to get some powa to the ground when auto-x’ing.
even 130 hp / 175 tq will brake the tires loose in a corner … even if its not a tight radius corner
i had both the tires on the lebaron lit up on plenty of the curves on zoar valley, its just a matter of knowing your car and how it responds, after that you can power thru what ever corner you want :gotme:
