maintenance on a ford escape...

my cousin has her heart set on a ford escape.

ideally she’d like awd and a 4cyl.

she just found one with 100k on it, my question is, what is she going to be looking at maintenance wise? i have no idea what breaks on fords. is it worth it to spend $8,000 on the escape with high mileage and just maintain it?

or

her second choice a toyota rav 4. they are priced higher as toyota’s hold there value better than ford’s do. I know toyota’s last longer, but what is their maintenance like. should she just spend more money and buy the toyota?

i’m sorry, i don’t know much about these cars. any advice on the pros and cons of the cars would be helpful.

lol… my dad use to be a tow truck driver (now a bus driver) for 4 years ending last year… I always would ask every year what his #1 towed car was… last 2 years he towed it was the escape for random stuff the most common was the driver door falling off…

but I would go with the Rav4 as it is a much nicer all around truck.

You can get an escape in 5spd manual.
Which is pretty cool.

But comparing a 100Kmile Domestic to a Import is so differnt

You hop in the 100Kmile domestic and the steering is very loose…the tranny shifts hard and the brakes are way to plush.

While a 100K mile rav4…while maybe be a little more expensive… feels almost ilike it did when you drove it off the lot brand new

Rav4 or subaru Forester. The escape is junk. Forester because you can get N/A or turbo and manual or auto. Rav4 is bigger but I believe is only auto now?

Brother’s fiance has a rav 4 and its very impressive the shape that it is in. It seems as if the RAV 4 would be a much more durable/reliable vehicle

no question, get the rav4.

the escapes just start falling apart after a few years… I used to have to help one of my coworkers find parts for her one like every couple weeks.

Niether. If you have to buy a vehicle with 100k miles to get it in your price range, especially if you’re financing, you’re buying more car than you can afford. Even more true if this is going to be her daily driver, which is sounds like it is.

Spend 8k on a Focus with 20k miles and drive it for several years with nothing but brakes and fluid changes.

Best advice

Otherwise a Rav4 or Forester, both are quite durable and will last awhile. The escape will be a huge headache very quickly.

i’m taking your advice on the subaru. i’ve been looking for foresters and outbacks.

also she isn’t financing the car, she just has 8 grand and wants an awd smaller suv. but i think foresters are a nice option for her.

My mom has an 03 forester with ~90K and the only thing she has done to it was the basic recommended maintance, nothing else.

Not my point. How many miles did it have when she got it?

She’s not talking about buying a new 03 and driving it for 100k miles. She’s talking about buying a car that already has 100k and driving it for another 50k or more. Most modern vehicles, domestics included, will be generally maintenance free for the first 100k. There are always exceptions but they occur for all manufactures.

Buy yeah, it’s another one of these posts: :deadhorse2:

Go buy what you want and have fun spending a large part of your budget on repairs over the next 50k.

thanks. i’ll pass that along to her.

just to be clear. i’m not buying the car. i have no clue about anything other than VW/Audi’s.

She needed help and asked me to do some research.

i’m not a total moron, i know ALL cars over 50,000 miles have some maintenance issues, thats why i asked.

I realize that. The “you” in my post wasn’t directed to “you” the poster, but the readers and people who ask these questions all the time. “You” the poster seem to have more sense than to buy a 100k mile SUV as a DD just so you can afford an SUV instead of a small car.

She bought the car brand new, there are always going to be expenses with repairs and recommend maintance. You have to buget that in if you buy a high milage car. Hell my Subaru legacy has 190k bought it at 170k and I have not done a damn thing to it besides brakes and an alternator, but I guess I just have been lucky. depends on the original quality of the car and how it has been taken care of, and driven. imo.

Bump
Great example of why you don’t buy a high mileage vehicle as your DD just so you can afford to get the car you want.

So your friend that thread and explain to her that with a 100k vehicle troubleshooting like that is going to be common. If she’s a good mechanic it might make financial sense, but if she has to get every little thing fixed at a shop it’s going to be a money pit.

Listen to the man, this is good advice.

make sure she test drive the escape,my mother has a mariner with the 4 banger and it is very loud. She may not like how loud the truck is

For 8K you should be able to buy much better vehicle.

You can pick up 2000 ish cherokees with the 4.0L straight 6 auto with ~75K for the ~$5,000 range. Then if anything does brake, you have some money in the bank to fix it.

Haha, you’re funny. The warranty will be up really soon and you will be left with a car that everything is falling apart on. You are better off with a 100K mile Rav 4

Rav4 or CRV would be a much better buy all around
