Malaysia Flight (Shot Down) Crashed?

Just for reference the US has also shot down a civilian airliner during conflict among with a few other countries.

I’m not sure what kind of recourse people are looking for? I doubt they intended on shooting down a civilian airliner just to piss off the rest of the world.

Jetfuel is expensive is the answer…

The airspace Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was flying in when it was shot down was not restricted, but airlines had been warned about the potential dangers, it has emerged. The International Transport Association said that an initial assessment revealed that the airspace the aircraft was traveling through was ‘not subject to restrictions’.

However, it emerged on Thursday that the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777-200 was flying just 300 meters above restricted airspace when it shot down

Previous to this Ukrainian authorities had barred aircraft from ground level to 32,000 feet but the downed plane was cruising at 33,000 feet, within range of ground-to-air missiles, when it was hit.

Indeed, speculation exists that the aircraft may have taken a short-cut across the disputed region of eastern Ukraine to save itself fuel.

On Monday, Eurocontrol – the body that coordinates all traffic across European airspace – sent out an official note to airmen, known as a Notam, repeating the warning and saying it ‘strongly advises’ avoiding the airspace.

But many carriers continued to use the route because it was shorter and therefore cheaper.

On July 8, the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian aircraft after rebels shot a military transport aircraft that was flying over 20,000 feet.

The restriction warned commercial aircraft against using Ukrainian airspace.

LZ, you never know. It was just a day before this, that Obama put more sanctions on Russia. Putin obviously doesn’t respect anyone outside of his country and he is lying to the world about their involvement in this. He is feeding these Pro-Russian forces with the ammunition they need. Now that this has happened, I think it’s time that those affected are going to look at something more than just sanctions on Russia…

It wasn’t a US flight

Also I don’t see why people get mad Putin is giving them weapons. The US gives all kinds of countries weapons and starts wars everywhere with little to no reason.

Nobody in Europe is going to do much besides bitch Russia supplies natural gas to most countries in the area.

The entire situation sucks but in the end a civilian plane shouldn’t have been cutting so close to an active warzone especially when planes have been shot down in the same area in the days prior.

I understand that. Like I said before, I think that it was mistaken for a Ukraine Spy plane.

That’s pretty much what’s going on here. All Putin wants to do is disrupt Ukraine without using Russia’s own military and he can control it from behind the curtain. Now it seems that someone made a misjudgement and I’m sure he will make them pay for it.

I think the difference is that there wasn’t a damn thing that Iran could do against the US in retaliation. Ukraine and Russia are another story…Ukraine could use this as a jump point to push Russian forces out of eastern Ukraine, and if we/nato back them we’ve practically started WW3.

While I don’t know how much reserve fuel the aircraft was carrying, a diversion even further north (they had to divert north of their regular route because of thunderstorms) to put them clear of the conflict area would have cost between $6,500 and $13,000, assuming the diversion added 30 to 60 minutes to the flight. They gambled and lost.

320 Million for the bird + 298 people at 6 million per(US DOT)+ any undisclosed cargo would be just over 2 billion dollars.

I heard there were no storms in the area after that was released…not sure which is the case?

The 777 has more than enough range to avoid this airspace. Flying over this warzone was 100% a cost savings decisions.

I could understand flying over small arms conflict zones because at 33k feet rebels have basically zero chance of taking down the plane. In this conflict however Russia is supplying the rebels with weapon systems like the BUK. Everyone knew they were operating here and could easily take down an airliner at that altitude.

In normal circumstances, flying above restricted air space would be at about 32k ft. In this instance, it really doesn’t matter.

Yeah they only had manpads…BEFORE…getting a little help from their friends.

This is the part I don’t get when people say Russia gave them XYZ type of weapons.

The US gives all kinds of horrible people weapons around the world to help control/stabilize/destabilize/influence and the US does this more than any other country.

It’s funny to watch the news complain about Russian doing it.

Completely agree, but we usually give people weapons then attack them for attacking other countries with said weapons

I don’t think the US is handing out Buk missile launchers to anyone…

Not sure what news you’re watching but recently Hamas started this crap

*Hamas killed 3 teens from Israel and said they will not punish the kidnappers/killers

*A few people from Israel killed a teen in revenge and Israel is sentencing them.

*Hamas attacks Israel for the revenge killing

*Israel fires back

*People are dying on both sides

*More women and children are dying in Palestinian because the terrorists hide behind women and children

*After days of fighting and the UN telling Israel to chill, both sides agree to a cease fire

*Days later Hamas fires 10 rockets into Israel breaking the cease fire

*Israel says enough and begins to move in

Tell me, if someone was attacking your family, would you fight back to protect them? If truce was called on both sides, then they begining attacking you again…what would you do?

Nah just biological warfare material, training, guns…etc.

Lol, Manpads.

Here is a photo of the Russian Buk after yesterday’s airliner was taken down.

In today’s day in age, you really can’t hide these things when people have such easy access to cameras and the ability to upload things to youtube immediately.

It’s known that Ukraine has brought in 27 of these Buk launchers, but only one is in the hands of the rebels who took over the base, right near where the plane was taken down.

I’m definitely not complaining they gave them weapons. Russia has a serious interest in seeing the rebels win. I’m just asking why the hell this airspace was still open when everyone knew barely trained rebels with little to no chain of command were cruising around in BUK launchers.

If two drunk neighbors on my street get into stupid fist fights all the time APD isn’t going to close down the road. The minute I walk over and give one of them an RPG… Street’s closed pizza boy.
