Dif-Eq
Otherwise the classes are the same in both, but there’s no “high-level” calc involved in the MET classes.

Welcome to the world of most MEs… they LIVE/BREATHE theory.
Thus the reason I said what I said about jobs above.
I hope you read this and find the soul of Jesussss in my eyes.
That’s a two way street you have there. I’ve met some METs that can turn a wrench to tighten or loosen a bolt, but don’t understand why there are torque specs.
ME will get your to a higher position and salary, either degree will get you in the door. Not a single MET has a management position or anything higher that “senior” technician where I work (GM). Very few BSMEs have management positions, many MSMEs rise to the top quickly. Even quicker if you have a PhD.
Touche… I’ll agree with that as well.
A ME or MET (or any degree for that matter) is just a piece of paper that said I took and passed a certain set of classes at this school. It doesn’t make a person “get it”.
I took differential equations, as well as matrix algebra, as well as testing out of Calc 1-4.
and then you got that license plate. FAIL :rx3:
im at buff state for this right now, we have dif-eq but its called analytical methods. (also includes matrix algebra) the class is getting the axe after this semester though and there will be a differential equations class offered thru the math department next year that is required instead.
fag nobody knows what i make. i have an MET degree therefore i’m poor.
Wow, you guys are hilarious, I didn’t know I was missing so much comedy gold having you on the IL.
Go back and read my posts, I never was disparaging about METs, but rather realistic. Look at the statistics, an entry level BSME will on average pull a higher starting salary than an entry level BSMET. Its just the facts of life. There is nothing wrong with METs, however saying that it is the same program is just laughable.
Tell me, could you guys sign up for the KGCOE sections of classes with the same names? No, you couldn’t because its not the same class. Saying “we had all the same classes” is like someone saying “Why do I need to take “Physics” in college, I took “Physics” in high school!”
Plenty of people left the College of Engineering ME path for MET when they could not handle the curriculum. Plenty of people started in the MET pathway when they were not accepted in to the COE.
Are there morons in both programs? Sure. Is generalizing by saying “Straight MEs don’t know anything other than theory” going to do anything other than make you look like an ignorant tool box? Not really… just like saying that METs don’t know any theory wouldn’t be true.
Most people in industry understand the difference between a BSMET and BSME program. The program is what builds the tools that make you successful as an engineer. Everyone knows that no-one sits at a desk and does manual stress calculations by hand.
I wouldn’t hire any mechanical engineer without a solid understanding of the “hands-on” basics. I do plenty of hiring / interviewing.
The differentiation between someone who is “all-theory” and someone who is “all-hands-on” is based on the PERSON and has nothing to do with the program they went through.
The BSME program (at RIT) is more rigorous than the BSMET program… draw your own conclusions. They didn’t create a similarly titled program in the College of Arts & Sciences just because they thought it was getting too crowded in the Engineering building.
There is nothing wrong with METs, there are plenty of METs that are better engineers than their ME counterparts, but saying “Its the same program” and “I’m going to get the same money out the door” just are not true statements. Its not a knock against anyone personally…
You would find it just as humorous if someone from MCC was claiming that their ME degree was going to get them the same job as you.
A MET is a BS, not a BA. (Science not Administration)
And it’s not the college of arts and sciences, it’s the College of Applied Sciences and Technology.
At least get your facts straight there.
degrees are varied at all colleges, its going to be really hard to compare between schools… some places probably have good MET programs, others don’t. Just like some have good ME programs and others don’t.
In the end the argument is pointless, and not really related to the OP’s question.
I think what needs to be re-stated to the OP is that do NOT expect to get the median, or even the low salary from those salary aggregate sites, especially in Buffalo. If you can land an ME job fresh out of college regardless of the pay consider yourself lucky in Buffalo. Get some experience, then start bitching about not making enough and find somewhere that will hire you for more money.
I agree completely!!!
Thus the reason I’ve put my 4-5 years in and am now going to either switch jobs/re-locate or go back for another degree on my current employer.
I’d love to see a blind poll, listing years of experience and salary.
Just leave Buffalo, or don’t bitch? I make more, live in a lower COL area with a higher quality of life. I don’t get it
It would be just like a 1/4 mile database, unless you provide a scan of your W2 and diploma, your vote is BS.
I had an old prof. ask me if I was glad I chose to go to BSC.
I told him it allowed me to get my current job.
lol
I was sooo naive in school, before joining the real world.
best advise out of the whole thread
and you can take KGCOE classes, I did, you go in, ask your counselor to take XXX class, they say ok, and you are off. That is where I took my solid modeling and design classes
I think everyone was. And those who don’t recgonize it, are still in that phase.
When you start out in your career, you are like a 16 year old kid that knows for sure that their parents are morons and couldn’t possibly know what they are talking about. A few years later it starts to make sense.
Early on, clearly everyone else is the morn, and the only way anyone is above you on the ladder is because of dumb luck, ass kissing, and whatever else you can come up with.
While that happens, most people get ahead through hard work and sucess…I think the people that complain the most are the ones least willing to work for it.
